[Feature] Taskbar / tray 'hover' shows a quick summary

Title kind of covers it to be honest, I really would love a simple at a glance tool to check if something is up.

I have several higher end solutions running on actual servers but a quick at a glance (including hover) would be lovely for a small selection of things.

Appreciate your hard work

Here's a dummy image, best I can do in short time. https://i.imgur.com/Og5VFwS.png

Note, wouldn't surprise me if Microsoft has blocked the ability for this kind of hover behaviour (no idea) but it's worth asking. Thank you again.

You could just increase your preview size by registry

Path: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Taskband Name: MaxThumbSizePx Type: dword 32 Value: 0x1f4

Details: https://www.tenforums.com/tutorials/26105-change-size-taskbar-thumbnails-windows-10-a.html Some suggest top increase the Minimum size as well: https://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/81852-taskbar-thumbnail-previews-change-size.html

Programmatically implementable solutions would be these: https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/previous-versions/gg465001(v=msdn.10)?redirectedfrom=MSDN

More customization would be possible in systray Icons but as far as i know nothing with "hover" over the icon effect

I've just realised that the software actually pop a small notification box (I've no sound enabled on my system) which shows me the current state of things, it's not bad actually. I notice the icon for the app has a red X in the middle, which I think might look nice as green if all up and a red X if any down but hey I'm just being pedantic.

The popup is just for change notification an not a live status.

Hi there,

I just tried vmPing and it’s awesome—exactly what I’ve been needing for years: a lightweight, fast, portable, no-frills multi-host ping monitor!

I normally use EMCO Ping Monitor, which is a corporate-grade product (database, service, etc.). The only real feature I miss in vmPing (aside from the different general approach) is a tray icon. That feature is quite essential, as it lets you instantly see whether all monitored hosts are alive—the icon switches from green to red if one goes down. Very useful when you step away from the screen and just need a quick glance to check everything is fine (without opening any window).

Please consider adding this feature, and again, thanks for maintaining this little gem. I’m already spreading the word among colleagues!

Cheers.

  • For the original question: no, I don't think it's possible to do a 'hover' effect on tray icons. I can do a fully custom window that appears on click, but left-click I want to focus the vmPing window, and right-click I want a context menu.
  • The preview size that An-dir mentioned works well for hovering over the icon in the task bar.
  • For the tray icon changing colors, I'm not sure that's worth doing unless there's more interest. Tray icons hide by default now anyways unless the user configures Windows to always show the vmPing icon. If you step away and come back, that's what the popup notifications are for: Options > Notifications

As far as it counts, I always set my main systray icons as "always visible" and this is exactly an example.

Thanks for your reply, I hope that you can consider it (if changing the icon at runtime is not extremely hard to code).
