Responding to html message on GMX web interface fails if default is set to plain text

Not sure if this is a bug or a feature! On GMX web mail, FF, Vivaldi, Chromium, and Otter open an HTML reply when responding to an HTML formatted message, even if the default composition format is plain text.

In Qupzilla, the browser pauses then offers the option of waiting longer or using the plain text editor. Choosing to wait has never resulted in anything other than an never-ending wait. Choosing plain text does work, although I have seen it (not always) generate a completely empty "reply" in the "Drafts" folder.
