Tabs still open but where?
Sorry to bother you, just a end user who can't figure out why firefox keeps telling me there are a (high) number of open tabs when I try to close the bigger window — and if and how can I get back the addresses I opened and kept open with your amazing plugin.
It seems that the addresses are stored in JSON files in a sub folder of your Firefox application data directory. The location varies across systems (Mac, Linux, Windows etc). In #560 you see some suggestions on how to find the lost tabs.
It's a bit technical, but if you had a lot of tabs and they were very important to you, it might be worth going through the pain of recovering them manually. For me, it just wasn't worth it.
It seems there are currently two suggested options:
- Downgrade Firefox to a version that supports the Tab Groups plugin and bookmark the tabs before Firefox auto updates again.
- Locate the data files (JSON format) and try to extract the important links from those.
Here is another interesting observation that I just made:
The Firefox window that used to contain my tab groups only had one final open tab, but as I was about to close the window Firefox warned me that I was about to close fifty-something tabs. For the last couple of weeks I have therefore been reluctant to close this window until I found a way to recover the tabs. Today I decided to just let go of my lost tab groups and go ahead and close that window by closing the last tab.
What happened then got me baffled:
The closed tab disappeared, but another tab "magically" appeared instead. It seemed to be one of my lost tabs. I went ahead and bookmarked it. Then I closed that tab too. Another tab appeared in its place - another one of the lost tabs. Repeating this procedure for fifty-something tabs I was able to bookmark the interesting ones and discarded the rest.
I never dared trying to close the window, as I assumed this might actually close and discard all the still open but hidden tabs. I kept closing tab after tab.
That is awesome, thank you! I'll try first th tchnical way, then if I'm not abl to go through I'll give a chance to the magic trick. Thank you, really.
