Sound output issues after update

Open blockisec opened this issue 2 years ago • 8 comments

How to file a helpful issue

Qubes OS release

Qubes release 4.1.1 (R4.1)

Brief summary

After the latest update of dom0 audio is either not working at all, or the output is distorted.

Steps to reproduce

Just watch a video online or do a call using jitsi or teams.

Expected behavior

Have clean sound as before.

Actual behavior

If there is any output at all, it is distorted.

Additional Stuff I noticed

  • A few reboots brings the sound back, if there was non before.
  • I only did a few tests but I noticed that the issue is not there when pavucontrol is open (without doing any changes in there)

This issue was also encountered by me and @esatravi, and it's present both in the recently published alsa-sof-firmware v2.1.1-1 official package (https://github.com/QubesOS/updates-status/issues/3022) and when v2.2 is manually installed from its repo.

FWIW, the workaround is not to just to make sure pavucontrol is running, but to make sure it is running and its "Configuration" -> "Show volume meters" checkbox is checked (https://github.com/QubesOS/qubes-issues/issues/7653#issuecomment-1199347657). It seems to be the default, but it's worth pointing out in case someone disabled it. Though I have no idea why that helps... :man_shrugging:

@blockomat2100, do you remember which packages were updated when this broke? I recently moved to a new Intel-based laptop and for me it was broken from the start, but I started with the latest current-testing packages from the start... :disappointed:

na-- avatar Jul 30 '22 13:07 na--

I think it broke in the transition to the 5.17 and later kernels.

No, sorry I dont know which packages were updated. But I also have an Intel-based laptop (HP ZBook Firefly) which requires alsa-sof-firmware, too.

blockisec avatar Jul 30 '22 18:07 blockisec

@blockomat2100, do you also have problems with audio input, like me and @esatravi (https://github.com/QubesOS/qubes-issues/issues/7653#issuecomment-1200281044)? In the dom0 pavucontrol I don't see the built-in laptop microphone, I just see a sof-hda-dsp Multichannel input that doesn't seem to pick up any actual sound (based on its volume meter). Unsurprisingly, assigning the dom0 microphone to a qube results in no sound when recording. Assigning an external USB microphone works as expected though, that's why I hadn't noticed that the support for the built-in laptop microphone was broken so far :disappointed:

na-- avatar Jul 31 '22 07:07 na--

Following the initial issue I had opened (https://github.com/QubesOS/qubes-issues/issues/7653) I confirm the microphone on my laptop doesn't work either. I am able to maintain the sound output via speakers/headphones using @na-- workaround, but unfortunately the workaround doesn't enable the microphone.

esatravi avatar Jul 31 '22 09:07 esatravi

I don't have problems with audio input, but I remember that I had some Mic problems in the first days of my setup. But I thought the fix was to install the sof-firmware and changing the device in the "Recording" tab from "Monitor XY" to "XY" device.

blockisec avatar Jul 31 '22 11:07 blockisec

changing the device in the "Recording" tab from "Monitor XY" to "XY" device.

Either that was already the case for me, or I'd changed it a while ago on, before I moved my install to the current laptop... In either case, this wasn't the issue :disappointed:

However, I found a bit of good news when it comes to microphone support. While I still can't get the built-in microphone in the laptop to work, I found out that I can successfully use the microphone of a pair of gaming headphones! :tada: The headphones have a 3.5mm analog jack, they are not USB-based, so attached to a qube like this: qvm-device mic attach <qube> dom0:mic. I didn't expect that to work, since the rest of the dom0 audio is so broken, but for some reason it does :man_shrugging: :tada:

@blockomat2100 Thank you so much for the inspiration. Initially I was looking for some setting within the 'Recording' section of the voice control panel. But that's where you control the individual VM's inputs. What I discovered, and what is also the immediate and permanent fix - is that on the 'Input Device' tab the microphone settings were 'muted' by default, right after the fresh install. Once unchecked the orange led indicator on the F8 key is gone (doubles as the mute button when Fn+F8) ! Sorted!

The OS should check the state of the hardware mute button and then make some smart decisions about it. Otherwise many users will have to go through hard times trying to figure out why the mic isn't working on a fresh QubesOS install.

I now have the microphone inputs in all VMs. The more, once the microphone mute toggle is unchecked it persists between reboots - no need to uncheck it every time you start your computer afresh. Thank you!

The only major 'bug' I'm left with on my laptop is the sleep mode - once I put it to sleep it never wakes up... the only way to recover it from the land-of-nods is the hard reset. And of course I don't want to do it as there is a high probability something wrong will happen to the file systems, qubes installation, or something similar.

Anyone has got a recipe or a workaround for waking up the laptop from sleep without rebooting? (#7611)

esatravi avatar Aug 03 '22 19:08 esatravi

same issue , even after upgrading to alsa-sof-firmware-2.1.1-1 , audio just working in one AppVM ! #7653

vzvva avatar Aug 22 '22 10:08 vzvva

audio just working in one AppVM

Working in just one AppVM suggests your sound card is attached to it directly. Go to that AppVM settings and check if you have it added in "devices" tab. If so - remove from there, and reboot.

marmarek avatar Aug 22 '22 11:08 marmarek

Thank you , i checked every vm in my system and none of them attached to audio pci device , this is like trigger , one vm turns off the sound of another vm .

vzvva avatar Aug 22 '22 11:08 vzvva

Using the kernel 5.16.18-2.fc32.qubes.x86_64 for dom0 and AppVMs solved the problem temporarily.

vzvva avatar Aug 24 '22 19:08 vzvva

Hi, I too have sound problems with the newest kernel 6.0.2.2 and qubes 4.1.1. Hardware is HP Laptop with Intel Core i5.

Right after boot, the sound is working in all AppVMs. Switching between AppVMs and using sound in any of them works. After a while sound stops in all AppVMs with no apparent reason.

With kernel 5.16.18-2 the sound works well all the time.

wuki1882 avatar Nov 07 '22 08:11 wuki1882

After upgrading Dom0 , the system can't suspend and freezes somtimes then i have to switch to kernel 5.15.64-1.fc32.qubes for working without any issue.

Latest dom0 updates:

  • The problem of system sound is permanent

kernel-qubes-vm.x86_64 1000:5.15.78-1.fc32.qubes

  • Suspension and system sound => OK

vzvva avatar Nov 20 '22 12:11 vzvva

I observed the following behavior:

  • started qubes dom0 kernel: 6.0.2-2.fc32.qubes.x86_64
  • sound is working in AppVM
  • updated Template for AppVM
  • sound is working in AppVM
  • shut down and restarted AppVM
  • sound is NOT working in AppVM

maybe that helps finding the problem.

The sound issue in 6.x kernel (or kernel-latest in general) should be fixed now in kernel 6.1.1 (see #7465 for details). I'm closing this one as duplicate, since it looks very similar. But if any of you can still reproduce it with 6.1.1 or 5.15.x kernel in dom0, please leave a comment.

marmarek avatar Dec 30 '22 05:12 marmarek

I can still reproduce it :disappointed: This issue is not the same as https://github.com/QubesOS/qubes-issues/issues/7465, and it still exists on my laptop with kernel 6.1.1 in dom0 and VMs.

As soon as I close the pavucontrol window in dom0 (or uncheck its Show volume meters option, see https://github.com/QubesOS/qubes-issues/issues/7634#issuecomment-1200157928), audio playback starts getting distorted in a few seconds.

uname -a

from dom0?

brendanhoar avatar Dec 30 '22 09:12 brendanhoar

Linux dom0 6.1.1-1.fc32.qubes.x86_64 #1 SMP PREEMPT_DYNAMIC Tue Dec 27 18:08:59 CET 2022 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux

I updated all of the dom0 packages to the latest qubes-dom0-current-testing yesterday, it seems only some anaconda-* package updates have since come out, everything else is the latest possible version.

This affects also HP EliteBook 1040, with 12th gen Intel CPU.

Opening pavucontrol "fixes" the issue. But also, starting recording (like parecord test.wav in dom0, or in a qube with mic attached) makes the sound output work. So, it seems this part of my report was not totally unrelated:

Additionally, when mixer is opened, pacat logs this:

Stream device alsa_input.pci-0000_00_1f.3-platform-skl_hda_dsp_generic.HiFi__hw_sofhdadsp_6__source resumed.Stream device alsa_input.pci-0000_00_1f.3-platform-skl_hda_dsp_generic.HiFi__hw_sofhdadsp_6__source resumed.

and few seconds after it's closed (when the sound breaks again):

Stream device alsa_input.pci-0000_00_1f.3-platform-skl_hda_dsp_generic.HiFi__hw_sofhdadsp_6__source suspended.Stream device alsa_input.pci-0000_00_1f.3-platform-skl_hda_dsp_generic.HiFi__hw_sofhdadsp_6__source suspended.

But note the above is about alsa_input, while playback is about alsa_output.

The very same dom0 but started without Xen have audio working fine, so it's something about Xen PV.

The very same dom0 but started without Xen have audio working fine, so it's something about Xen PV.

My gut feeling, as before, is that there's some dma-related nonsense in the kernel audio hw driver(s) and the user space access patterns that...isn't quite right...but that also isn't symptomatic on non-Xen system, yet Xen doesn't like the behavior.

I tried crawling deep into this rabbit hole last year (earlier?) when this issue/related issues showed up in 4.0 but parenthood has my "extra" (hah) energy elsewhere.

I experience the same issue like described in #8194 on a Lenovo Thinkpad P1 Gen 5 using kernel 6.6.2. Workaround is the keep the audio mixer open while playing audio. Happy to provide debug information.
