I can confirm tray icons regularly disappear from notification area when using xfwm4 too. Skype (mostly), Pidgin, NM, even Qubes manager 3.2rc2

Thanks; updated. Is that Xfwm4 under Xfce4?

andrewdavidwong avatar Aug 25 '16 20:08 andrewdavidwong

(debian 8; KDE) Happened to me also during being affected by #2268. During that time the Qubes VM Manger (QVMM) systray was completely gone.

I have noticed a little detail for the problem related to i3. At least for me only the icons from vms disappear, the Dom0's icon's are always visible, in my case qubes manager and redshift.

On the default Qubes R3.2 installation it happens to me as well, I had the power("battery") icon disappear from tray. I think icons representing panel items stay where they are properly, the problem seems to be happening only to the ones in the small rectangle where Qubes VM Manager, networking and power live by default.

Do the systray icons really disappear? Or are they just transparent? Like this:

image

That's easy to confuse, because it's hard to visibly see the transparent systray. Can you check please in the tray area if there is like an invisible item, the one you are missing? If so, the left and right click actions should still work as usual. If so, then this ticket could be a duplicate of #2216.

For me systray icon become maximized on i3, like a normal App when the problem appears

It seams the systray is no longer docked or accessable via the primary screen. If i restart the qubes agent responsible for it and not the application the tray icon is fir it will then return. But if i rest i3 or change any screen settings eg add 2nd screen they disapear again.

Is there any way to support on this issue? I'm happy to invest some debugging effort if a Dev can tell me where i could start looking. It really keeps bothering me usability wise.

tzelch avatar Feb 20 '17 18:02 tzelch

If this can help, I just find a way to fully fix systray and make all app return to systray. killall i3bar; shortcut for restart i3; then close all systray window which are maximized. I think we can play with a x tool (xprop)? For close automatically all maximized windows and make a script?

Like @adrelanos said, nm-applet is just transparent for me. If I hover over the right spot and right/left click, I can use the applet as usual.

Hi Andrew,

The issue is not fixed. It is still present on R4.0

adrianx64 avatar Apr 01 '19 04:04 adrianx64

For me this became an issue within a few days ago after update. (before that I wasn't updated for about 3-4 month). Reproduced constantly with the same behavior - all qubes icons (except wi-fi) became transparent right after returning from suspended mode. Test case:

  1. reboot OS to enter clear state, see initial set of icons: Image
  2. Suspend OS
  3. return from suspended mode, see whole set of icons for a fraction of a second, then see that all icons except wi-fi gone Image
  4. hover mouse over empty space and see tool-tips, and menu if area clicked which means Icons still there but are became transparent.

Also off topic:
can somebody tell me why my wi-fi icon looks so strange? it is like it is for about half a year. Are the any easy steps to turn it into more nice look?

pkraskov avatar May 28 '19 14:05 pkraskov

Same behavior after return from suspending. Got this issue after kernel changing 4.14 -> 4.19.43-1. Switching back to 4.14.119-2 version fix the problem.

jevank avatar May 29 '19 18:05 jevank

What GPU do you have @pkraskov @jevank ? Radeon? If that's the case, try 4.19.43-3 (in testing repository).

marmarek avatar May 29 '19 18:05 marmarek

@marmarek Thinkpad X1 Gen6 with intel GPU

jevank avatar May 29 '19 18:05 jevank

In my case icons not disappearing, looks like padding-margin issues. When tuning panel size it comes visible. In addition got black zones on ScreenSaver unlock screen.

jevank avatar May 29 '19 19:05 jevank

I have same laptop model (Thinkpad x1c6)

pkraskov avatar May 29 '19 19:05 pkraskov

FWIW, in my installation I see this problem: the icons disappear completely. I also see drawing issues with the nm-applet icon - it starts out pretty after first boot (showing wifi signal strength in a red bar), then degrades and appears as a strange red blob. Right now there's nothing for me to send a screenshot - icons like nm-applet and Skype are simply gone entirely, can only be brought back by restarting the processes in question. This happens without any specific trigger - an hour ago I restarted nm-applet and the icon was there, at some later point it's suddenly gone - hard to notice immediately for me because I'm running three screens, but I certainly didn't suspend the machine or do anything other than work in some browser windows.

My environment is i3, but I also noticed the nm-applet icon disappearing when I was using xfce right after qubes installation (this is a new setup just a few days old).

I'm running 4.14.119-2, not using testing or other non-default repositories. My GPU is a Radeon RX 580.

oliversturm avatar Sep 13 '19 10:09 oliversturm

I have exactly same problem. It started since my last update. My laptop is Thinkpad T470s.

Do you see some issues with dom0 applications? Try dom0 terminal, or settings manager.

marmarek avatar Sep 19 '19 00:09 marmarek

@marmarek Yes I see, there are sometimes problems with window repainting.

problem0 problem1 problem2

seberm avatar Sep 19 '19 16:09 seberm

I can confirm similar issue, but only after switching to text console and back. Just after starting X server (like logout and login back) it works fine, as long as I don't switch to text console. Does it happen to you @seberm even without switching console?

marmarek avatar Sep 19 '19 17:09 marmarek

@marmarek unfortunately yes. I am able to reproduce it just with window maximization/minimization.

Strange thing that I can also reproduce it just by selecting some part of my desktop with mouse pointer:

mouse-problem0

Sometimes I am able to see some crapped content of other windows in these rectangles.

Note that it is only dom0 where I can see these problems. All the other domains seems to work just fine.
