Notes from meeting with Santa Monica arborists
Please transcribe any notes/thoughts you have from the 8/27 meeting with the Santa Monica arborists.
Valuation
- We don't have access to the internal valuation of the trees, as calculated by the city
- We can do some heuristics about the number of replacement trees that a given tree is worth. How many young, small trees does it take to replace an old large one?
- itree planting: free software provided by the US Forest Service to provide environmental benefits of a tree. https://landscape.itreetools.org/
Management
- There is data about pruning cycles, might be interesting to show.
- There is a five year planting plan, replacement species, could be useful to the city for quick queries.
- Different avenues have different tree themes.
- There is a plan for species diversity, helpful to guard against pests and diversity.
- Tree removal notices
Community
- Statistics for neighborhoods
- Show management plans on a per-neighborhood basis: "not just NoMa".
Database
- Can we bring back replacement species in the data? It is probably not accurate on a per-planting-unit basis, more like a per-management-unit.
- How often to update?
- Sounds like we should add management units to the database.
ArborAccess does a lot of the things that we are talking about. But it is closed-source and oriented around urban forest management.
Here are my notes from the meeting.
