F5 stops working after being idle for hours
Prerequisites
- [X] I have written a descriptive issue title.
- [X] I have searched all issues to ensure it has not already been reported.
- [X] I have read the troubleshooting guide.
- [X] I am sure this issue is with the extension itself and does not reproduce in a standalone PowerShell instance.
- [X] I have verified that I am using the latest version of Visual Studio Code and the PowerShell extension.
- [X] If this is a security issue, I have read the security issue reporting guidance.
Summary
I was using VSCode happily and left it idling overnight. When I came back in the morning pressing F5 no longer worked. It shows "debugging" started but nothing actually happens.

After restarting the session - things work again. I've seen it before in earlier previews.

having the same issue do not need to wait for hours to have it hanging. allready had this issue in previous version had to rollback to 2021.10.2
Thanks for the report @PrzemyslawKlys , is just F5 not working or is the extension not working at all?
Haven't noticed really. Probably yes. If it happens again I will report. For me it happens very rarely and I can't really complain.

I have two machine and one is working perfectly with no issue I suspect a module to be the problem root cause will remove them one by one until I find the suspect
Similar issue when running through code by using F5. It goes fine for a while and then it stops... hangs... pressing another time F11 or F10 will not move the cursor or show the prompt again. It's like the prompt is performing something but the yellow line indicating where we are in the script isn't there anymore.
Only solution is to kill the PowerShell integrated console and have it start fresh. This happens with

@DarkLite1 Have you seen it repro with v2022.5.1? And how long does is "a while"?
Usually after 2 to 3 executions with F5 it fails. So it's not needed to wait for hours. Also annoying is that breakpoints are not respected when not launching with F5 but from the console. But that's another issue.
It's hard to consistently reproduce this behavior. Haven't tried with v2022.5.1, a bit lack of time at the moment.
Have successfully tested with 2022.5.1 and the issue is not present
Between 51. and 5.5 this PR was the most closely related to debugging: https://github.com/PowerShell/PowerShellEditorServices/pull/1803/files 🤔
I actually started having this issue more and more :-(
Does it also not repro in 5.1 for you @PrzemyslawKlys?
I haven't noticed, but indeed I changed lately to 7.3. I'll take a look with 5.1.
Sooo sorry, I mean v2022.5.1 of the extension, not Windows PowerShell 5.1. Please keep using PowerShell Core (now 7.4 I think!)
Hey @PrzemyslawKlys, how is this issue with the latest extension version?
Havent had any issues lately so I cant complain 😊
Great!
