AXFR Fails when many SMIMEA Records are Present
Environment

Steps to reproduce

Expected behaviour
- Full AXFR with all records is sent.
- If AXFR cannot be fully produced, do not send at all
- On receiving side: do not accept truncated AXFR for zone updates
Actual behaviour
- Sending side: Truncated AXFR is sent, containing only the SOA record.
- Receiving side: commits zone update using truncated AXFR, discarding missing records (impacting availability of services!)
Other information
- Minimal example uses lmdb, but we also observed this issue using gmysql backend.
- We observed that more than just the SOA record is present in the AXFR (but not everything).
- When removing any RRset from the minimal example, things seem to work. The transfer size is then suspiciously close to 64kB

(Background: Zone truncation is pretty serious so we can't risk it, but we're still looking to quickly get rid of the current "workaround" of simply disabling SMIMEA. Also, we don't know whether this can happen with other rdtypes, so we're a little "uneasy" generally.)
This is two bugs.
- as a primary, we may overfill packets, and the way the code flow works, there is little we can do but TC a chunk, which is terrible.
- as a secondary, we treat a TC chunk as a valid but empty chunk, and then merrily go on to treating the next chunk (containing the closing SOA) as a valid terminator to the stream
#11954 makes the primary abort a transfer instead of sending the TC chunks.
#11953 fixes (2), reducing this problem from "random data loss" to "transfers now always fail", which is a good start.
Neither fully solve the problem - the data is still not making it to the secondary.
Do you think this'll make it into 4.7.0?
So - the two changes mentioned in my previous comment will make it into 4.7.0 (unless it turns out they break things, etc.). A full fix (allowing your example zone to actually transfer) is more involved and will likely have to wait.

Yes - the chunk size is in records, and then five layers deeper, we find out the chunk doesn't fit. This will be somewhat of a rework.

Works for me, has some decent context now. I'll update the title.
I am not capable of doing and proper fix and refactor the whole AXFR chunk code. But as it seems that this bug will not be fixed soon, I was looking for a workaround. Using d_maxchunkrecords(1) (instead of the default d_maxchunkrecords(100)) in signingpipe.cc causes PowerDNS to put only 1 RR in every DNS message. This will probably make AXFR-out more inefficient due to the additional overhead, but it works around the bug.
Until someone refactores the code I suggest to add a config option axfr-out-rrs-per-chunk with default 100, which can be used to work around the bug. (or clone Bind's transfer-format option and allow one-answer or multiple-answer). After a proper fix this woraround can be removed.
So would you accept a PR for this workaround, at best to be added to 4.8.0?

I just AXFRed-out 4 mio real customer zones from PowerDNS and compared the results of d_maxchunkrecords(1) vs. the default d_maxchunkrecords(100). I did not saw any differences. Hence, d_maxchunkrecords(1) seems not to have any negative side effects, except maybe slowing down the AXFR due to more DNS message overhead.
For the test I used @zeha's patch with workaround-11804-max-chunk-records=1
nice! any idea about CPU usage? 100% while transferring the 4mio zones, in both cases :-) I have not tested performance losses yet. In our case I think they are negligible. Just a simple test with a zone with ~50k RRs:

So, the results are surprising, having 1RR per chunk seems to be even faster (on loopback).
right. might be saving time on compression, which matches the triple byte count :)
I just retested to AXFR the same zone with dig from Vienna to New York: In that case, both variants take ~2.1s. So, for local or high speed connections the workaround with d_maxchunkrecords(1) improves the AXFR duration, but increases AXFR size. For low bandwitdh connections, d_maxchunkrecords(100) may be faster due to the reduced AXFR size. My conclusion: I think there will not be any noticable drawback of using d_maxchunkrecords(1).

I have tested AXFR+TSIG with d_maxchunkrecords(1) and it works. Every DNS message has an "answer section" with 1 RR, and an "additional section" with 2 RRs (type OPT + type TSIG). So it seems that EDNS and TSIG is not affected by d_maxchunkrecords(1) settings. @mind04 Is there anything special that should be tested?
Some numbers about the performance would be nice. Since on top of losing compression this will also, more ore less, triple the number of transferred RRs for a zone.
Changing the chunk size from 100 to 1 would increase the framing (OPT record generation, TSIG hash invocations, etc.) costs by a factor of 100, right? That should be fine, but if there are any performance bugs in the code, or if someone wants to transfer humongous zones on a Raspberry Pi, it could be painful.
IMHO d_maxchunkrecords(1) is a not too bad workaround for the very few people that are affected by this, but is should be optional as it might hurt for others.

The corruption was fixed by breaking the AXFR. This is indeed better than corrupted AXFR, but I need to AXFR the zone out of PDNS.

IMO it is, and surely we will clearly document the parameter. It is just the wording of the parameter:

It was not fully backported to 4.5 and 4.6: Both miss the server side fix. PowerDNS 4.6 and 4.5 still produce corrupted outgoing AXFRs.
