FAO @PostHog/marketing. We should probably aim for 80% of the above. Please suggest any you think we should add in.

andyvan-ph avatar Jan 12 '24 17:01 andyvan-ph

Weirdly I think it might be worth doing the Optimizely one purely to help filter out the wrong kind of ICP?

Strong +1 on alternatives to Segment.

Growthbook is probably worth considering?

charlescook-ph avatar Jan 12 '24 17:01 charlescook-ph

+1 on Growthbook Pendo

More options:

  • uxcam alternative (110/m) for session replay
  • userpilot alternatives (140/m) for product analytics, surveys + onboarding
  • smartlook alternatives (140/m) for product analytics, session replay
  • crazy egg alternatives (110/m) for session replay
  • lucky orange alternatives (110/m) for session replay, surveys, analytics
  • split alternative (110/m) for feature flags and a/b testing

Do we want to adjust the positioning of this blog on open source Hotjar/Fullstory alternatives? Current ranks poorly for Fullstory alternatives.

That page actually targets stuff like "Hotjar open source" and "fullstory open source" so no need to change.

I think we should avoid any with zero search at the moment, as there are plenty with some search we can work on.

I think @Lior539's tutorial work showed ranking top for something with "zero search" can generate decent traffic – "0" often means they just don't have the data, not that there's literally zero search. For example, I'll be amazed if there's really no searches for "AB tasty alternatives" given it's a pretty well established product.

That said, we should 100% prioritize the ones with bigger search first and only do the "zeros" if they align super well with our ICP – e.g. GrowthBook is much smaller, but aligns very well with our ICP. Same for Flagsmith.

Suggestions

  • uxcam alternative (110/m) ✅
  • userpilot alternatives (140/m) - already had it under "other"
  • smartlook alternatives (140/m) - ✅
  • crazy egg & lucky organge - I think these are both too marketing orientated atm.
  • split alternative (110/m) - will add but I think this is really a "0/mo". I strongly I suspect some of these searches are people looking for an alternative to visiting Split in Croatia!

Ok, I have:

  1. Added more suggestions
  2. Put them into some kind of priority order

@Lior539 @ivanagas I can take session replay and you guys can split feature flags?

Probably makes sense to focus on the ones with reportable search for now. Once we've covered them off, we can review.

andyvan-ph avatar Jan 17 '24 10:01 andyvan-ph

@andyvan-ph Sounds good. I will likely only get around to it in Mid-march. Id like to complete the tutorials megaissue first and have about 35 tutorials I'd like to write first

Lior539 avatar Jan 18 '24 08:01 Lior539

Yeah, no worries. There's no massive rush. We'll just keep chipping away at them over the next month or so.

andyvan-ph avatar Jan 18 '24 08:01 andyvan-ph

Stat sig are quite up and coming in the experimentation space

jamesefhawkins avatar Jan 18 '24 16:01 jamesefhawkins

Ah yes, totally forgot. Lior even wrote a comparison on them. Will add.

andyvan-ph avatar Jan 18 '24 16:01 andyvan-ph

Mental note: Firebase alternatives

andyvan-ph avatar Feb 27 '24 10:02 andyvan-ph

Ok, we aren't going to get to all of these, and as we have a lot to do in Q2, we really need to focus. I suggest we only do the ones we have a product launched now and get search traffic (+ Statsig and Growthbook because requested). We can write alternatives as part of the launch of new products. This means:

Session replay

  • [ ] Uxcam (110/m)

Feature flags & A/B testing

  • [ ] VWO - 170/mo
  • [ ] Optimizely - 260/mo
  • [ ] Split - 110/mo
  • [ ] Statsig - 0/mo
  • [ ] Flagsmith - 30/mo
  • [ ] GrowthBook 0/mo

Surveys

  • [ ] Userpilot - 140/mo
  • [ ] Sprig - 30/mo
  • [ ] Survicate - 40/mo

ivanagas avatar Mar 22 '24 18:03 ivanagas

Agreed. Will update this issue today, but will change these a little. UXcam is mobile only, so only makes sense to do that when iOS and Android replays have shipped.

Given the current status of surveys, I'm unsure if we want to invest there. I suspect web analytics will be valuable once that's ready.

andyvan-ph avatar Mar 25 '24 11:03 andyvan-ph

Q2

Priority

  • [ ] VWO - 170/mo
  • [ ] Optimizely - 260/mo
  • [ ] Split - 110/mo
  • [ ] Statsig - 0/mo
  • [ ] Flagsmith - 30/mo
  • [ ] GrowthBook 0/mo
  • [ ] Plausible - 170/mo (once web analytics ships)

Nice to haves

  • [ ] Segment - 480/mo (get in first and add PostHog later)
  • [ ] Rudderstack - 70/mo (get in first and add PostHog later)

Have updated the issue as above.

andyvan-ph avatar Mar 25 '24 13:03 andyvan-ph

@Lior539 @ivanagas @Lior539 @jtemperton I've split up the high prio alternatives guides amongst us above. Ian has already done / started on his. Will assume these are fine unless I hear otherwise! 😉

andyvan-ph avatar Apr 08 '24 14:04 andyvan-ph

Im assuming its fine if I get these done sometime before the end the quarter?

Lior539 avatar Apr 08 '24 14:04 Lior539

@Lior539 Yes, but let's bias to the first half rather than the second. The earlier we do these, the sooner we'll reap the benefits.
