asynctest doesn't work with Python 3.11. It looks unmaintained. Switch to pytest-asyncio?

I'm happy to add Python 3.12 if there's interest in this PR at all :shrug:

I'm very sorry for the absolute lack of response here. I really want to tackle some of the backlog. Please do add 3.12 to the PR, that would be very much appreciated. Thanks.
