incinerator made of cardboard
Brief description of the issue
Garbage incinerator apparently does not burn hot enough to burn garbage because it's made of cardboard or garbage is largely made of asbestos. Either way was of genuine concern last night when the walls of the incinerator burnt long before the many items of garbage disposed of.
In the end, you're left with building ash and a pristine pile of garbage atop it. Forget cockroaches, garbage is what will triumph in the end days.
What you expected to happen
Ideally, garbage burns, and the structure built to burn garbage burns less
What actually happened
I very nearly melted down the station in a garbagecidal rage
Steps to reproduce
Put a bunch of types of rubbish in the incinerator, start the gas flow into the chamber, light that puppy up and watch. Read a book while you wait, it's a bit slow, but you'll probably get there. I heard someone complain about the incinerator taking damage the round before and wanted to check it out, so it's probably reproducible.

Unless I am drastically off base for Polaris, items don't take fire damage period, the incinerator has always been a newbie trap for this reason.
That did seem to be the case, insofar as a sheet of paper was well on its way to outlasting the walls of the incinerator.
Loaf is completely correct here, the incinerator has always (I think) mostly been designed more for antagonist use than an actual practical part of the station, at least on bay-derived codebases. Wall damage became a thing significantly later and since then incinerators across many codebases have a tendency to burn down. (As did toxins mixing when that was a thing on certain station layouts.)
I believe /tg/ has a system for items to ignite and take damage over time so the incinerator there has some use. I wonder if that's a thing we could port here with enough work?
