I think it would be good to make clear int the application name that this is a branch of the google version.. Something like MyTracks OS or MyTracks Platypus or something

Agree.

This needs some more thinking on what would be all consequences of it; but yes, if this is meant to be published somewhere, I think it will have to be clear this is a community-based fork of the original Google version.

You will also need to change the package name, or Android will think it's the same app as the original MyTracks. I think it's enough to change the applicationId field in build.gradle.
