From the posted reference on "lentil straw" it seems that lentil straw is composed of dry matter of the plant including leaf, branch, pod, and root. Would it be sufficient to use protein content?

Usually the straw sample have branches and chaff after threshing. Chaff is made up of unthreshed pods, short branches/stem, leaf and broken seeds. In the reference paper, Yes; the comparison was made between the sample of usual produce (straw after threshing) and the samples collected from different parts (leaf, branch (including mainstem), pod and root) of sun dried plants for straw quality analysis. The analysis involve parameters such as crude protein content, neutral detergent fibre and invitro digestability.
