tree whole plant subcategories

Tree scientists often measure traits of trees (whole plant PO:0000003) at different stages/sizes: seedling, sapling, herb, shrub, etc... Some of these are currently listed as synonyms to 'whole plant' and some of them are growth stages. it might be nice to add terms to further divide the 'whole plant category'. Is there any distinction in the tree-research world that could be used to better define these new terms?
