Any way you can fix the commit history on this? Might not be a big deal since we squash on merge but it makes the PR a bit harder to review

sorry to keep you waiting, but I would like to first try #2217 and then we can decide whether this is still useful, or whether it can already be expressed with the CaveMap structure system.
