Torch progression idea
@Argmaster has mentioned this idea a few times (e.g. in #1281), but there isn't actually an issue for it yet.
The basic idea is to have three tiers of torches:
- wood torches, which are a lot dimmer
- standard coal torches
- bright white torches, as bright as white glowcrystal (original proposal was to use magnesium, but why not use white glowcrystals?)
As inspiration, in Better Than Wolves, infinite light sources come in the form of a (very dim) redstone block, nether coal torches, and netherrack with fire. Each of these have their own place in the game.
Redstone blocks are easy and abundant, but dim, so don't cover much ground. Nether Coal Torches take a lot of effort to get, but are bright and can light campfires for free. Netherrack on fire is very bright and covers a lot of ground, but is an obvious fire hazard.
The suggestion was to have wooden torches, because without torches it is not possible to explore caves, they are too dark (and that is good!) and unless you are lucky and get coal next to cave entrance, you must go and search for different cave. On the other hand, normal torches don't give enough light to explore huge dark caves of <1000, where every step may result in falling to you death.
We could possibly include coal in above-ground boulders to fix this issue.
That is "lets lower the difficulty level to negative" approach. I believe it is better to provide different tools that are obtainable on surface and do the opposite - move coal deeper, so it not possible to find it next to the entrance. This also means that it no longer has to be that all present, since there is an alternative in case you run out of coal torches.
As higher tier light source minecraft has lanterns with special model, they also have decorative properties, that's something to consider.
I am considering it... :) 👍
Wooden torches could burn out, while coal torches do not.
It could also potentially use cloth
I was thinking if cloth could be craftable from grass and similar vegetation that looks like it has fibers, then I would agree that making the recipe planks+cloth is much better than just planks+wood or alike.
As for burning out, that's hard to implement, depends what @IntegratedQuantum thinks about it, but even if approved it will be one of those forever planned never implemented features.
Real torches aren't made with coal. Minecraft sort of started that trend XD
As for burning out, that's hard to implement
It would be trivial with #1338
However I don't like the idea that your buildings will stop functioning over time. If you use dim wooden torches to give your builds a different mood, then you shouldn't need to renew all your torches every time you return from a trip.
Can we allow extinguishing them manually? Then we could have their extinguished variants in some dungeons, so you can lit them without using torches? It would have idk Indiana Jones vibe?
Maybe, I don't know if it's worth implementing a torch-relighting just for a handful of structures, though it might give it a a nice touch.
Hear me out. Sticky torches. Crafted with torch and resin, you can throw it and it will automatically place on block it hits. When broken gives you normal torch (who would break torches anyway?)
Oh yes, this would be awesome, want to know how deep the cave is? Just throw a torch.
Maybe it's not exactly a torch, so that it could be tossed upwards onto a ceiling? Because I don't think upside down torches would make sense. Would also give a greater variety of light blocks Something like a glowstick, but not called a glowstick.
A burning arrow maybe?
Something like a glowstick, but not called a glowstick.
Why not a glowstick? It could be craftable from glimmergills.
