Tree Tapping

Open careeoki opened this issue 8 months ago • 2 comments

This provides a renewable way to get #1325 , as well as some other materials. This is also the first farming-type thing with an issue. So that's something else to think about.

Sappy logs

Some logs will be a unique sappy/resinous variant. Breaking this block drops 1 log and 1 sap/resin. Or, you can place a tapper on the block to start tapping it.

  • You can only tap sappy logs.
  • Only 1 tapper per log.
  • If a tree has multiple sappy logs, you can tap them all at the same time.

If we want tapping to be finite, the tapper could eventually deplete the sappy log, turning it into a regular log.

You can right click a log with resin to turn the log into a resinous log (consuming the resin). This is only decorative, you cannot tap this log. You can tell it is a decorative log if you do not see particles dropping from the tapper.

Tapping

  • Craft a tapper with metal + something else maybe
  • Place a tapper on a sappy log.
  • Right click the tapper with a bucket (same buckets as #627) to place it and start collecting resin. You can occasionally see particles dripping into the bucket.
  • When the bucket is filled with resin, you can collect the “raw resin bucket” and cook it in a furnace (evaporating the water. you keep the bucket) to get the resin item used for tools or crafting.

Tapping products

Sap (oak, birch) Could be used in crafting as:

  • A cheap adhesive
  • An ingredient in a basic healing ~juice~ potion
  • Ingredient for fertilizer or similar

Resin (pine) Sticky modifier and varnish in crafting -> varnished wood which is better than regular wood handle?

Syrup (maple, palm (we don’t have either of these)) Ingredient in foods or crafted into sugar.

Amber (petrified trees) Now this is moving into fantasy territory… but I think this would be fun. Since amber has specific spawning locations it would be harder to get large quantities of, so having a renewable source would be convenient. Also, if Petrified trees only appear in rare caves and they don't have saplings, you would have to build your amber farm at the cave. So it's not like you can make a giant field of petrified trees to mass produce amber.

Some suggestions: To only allow it on natural trees natural we could add a new wood type that sometimes replaces the source. Then we could also deplete the source after one resin bucket or something to prevent infinite farming.

Also important question: How do we let the player know that this mechanic exists and how it works?

We could rarely spawn taps and depleted wood in forests to suggest that the mechanic exists. IMO taps should have durability and that durability should be preserved after placing, so naturally spawning taps could have low durability, so you don't make / find one for life.
