Empty Whitespace below Picture if no Title/Description is set

After upgrading Piwigo and the respective theme, the thumbnail view started to show the file as caption below the images:

Event though the respective theme settings are deselected:

As a workaround I tried to enable the option "use description rather than title" since the description of all images are empty:

.. this made the white box area beneath the picture smaller but it didn't disappear:

Is this the intended behavior or a potential issue introduced with the last update?

Sidenote: After manuall selection "grid view" from the top right, the white boxes disappear in all albums. When the page is opened in a new browser instance the boxes return.
