[what happened] Some Rpi failures will not persist/fire last-wills from MQTT

I had a bunch of jobs running for an experiment, but then I accidentally connected the 5V pin to the GND pin, which killed the Pi. Upon reboot, all the jobs were still saying ready (as this was the value stored in MQTT), and continued to say that, suggesting that the LWT never fired.

Further testing to try to repro:

  • sudo shutdown did send LWT
  • pulling the power plug from RPi did send LWT
