Can't run on Wayland: Error 71 (Protocol error) dispatching to Wayland display.

Description I've just installed Pinta 3.0.1 from Flatpak via KDE Discover, but running it fails with Gdk-Message: 11:09:43.993: Error 71 (Protocol error) dispatching to Wayland display.

Were you able to run previous versions successfully, or is this new with 3.0.1 specifically?

Looking around online this seems to be a more general issue on some systems (e.g. https://discussion.fedoraproject.org/t/gdk-message-error-71-protocol-error-dispatching-to-wayland-display/127927/36, which also has a suggested workaround of configuring the GSK_RENDERER environment variable)
