Hey im writing this more of a warning of some kind and also to share this weird behaviour from github. so i was using this plugin to help myself a bit training math for School when suddenly I started to get error when trying to send a message in chat tab, later I noticed an email from github about copilot access suspension. Idk what really caused it but its kinda bad. Also I will add that I only used the chat feature, inline suggestions were disabled

Also here's a bit of the email for more information

Recent activity on your account has caught the attention of our abuse-detection systems. This activity may have included use of Copilot via scripted interactions, an otherwise deliberately unusual or strenuous nature, or use of multiple accounts to circumvent usage limits.

Due to this, we have suspended your access to Copilot.

While I’m unable to share specifics on rate limits, we prohibit all use of our servers for any form of excessive automated bulk activity, as well as any activity that places undue burden on our servers through automated means. Please refer to our Acceptable Use Policies on this topic: https://docs.github.com/site-policy/acceptable-use-policies/github-acceptable-use-policies#4-spam-and-inauthentic-activity-on-github.

Hi @Jacob1Tm, thanks for the warning! It's strange that you received this warning. I did a lot of testing while building this chat extension and my account is still OK.

Were you massively using the chat extension of this plugin?

I think I will put a warning when starting a new chat to alert users that their account might be blocked if they massively use the chat requests.

i was studying for about 1,5h and I might sent 30 requests over time I think? right now I can't really check that but I decided to contact the support and got first respond but its kinda the same thing as the mail I got I will try to get more info

Hello!

I had this issue as well. My copilot was suspended after using the plugin for ~30 minutes. However, I got it back by sending a ticket to GitHub and explaining the situation.

They told me this:

It seems that your access to Copilot was restricted due to excessive and/or automated usage, the use of multiple accounts to circumvent usage limits, usage through a proxy that interferes with how Copilot works, or credential sharing. This type of activity is in violation of our Terms of Service.

However, I have now removed the restriction from your account. We kindly ask that you use Copilot strictly within our supported extensions and comply with our Terms of Service going forward to prevent any future restrictions.

For basic security hygiene; please ensure that your credentials are being used exclusively by you. Please note that scripting against our API, including automated or excessive usage and programmatic token generation, is prohibited.

Please be aware that any subsequent violations of our Terms of Service and our Acceptable Use Policies may lead to the permanent revocation of your Copilot access and a permanent suspension of your GitHub account.

So maybe something changed in the terms of service?

Interesting... well they replied to my ticket after about 1h asking for more info but now for 2 days there's nothing so... idk I will see, for now my access is still restricted

Yeah maybe the terms of service has changed... I've added a warning for users so that they what they risk by using this chat extension :/

Well i got my access back, they replied saying that I shouldn't use multiple account, proxy's etc pretty much ignoring what I wrote and warning me to not do the same again lol. At least google has nice free tier for Gemini so I can use this

@Pierrad could it be related to this: https://github.com/orgs/community/discussions/130825 It seemed to be happening to other extensions - sorry this was from a year ago so its unlikely.

It's a bit annoying. I suppose I should have gone for the OpenAI API.

Hi, another one hit with the ban here. I've been using it for 2 or 3 months, mainly for the inline suggestions without problems. Today I wanted to use the chat for some questions and pam, the ban arrived. Now I'm trying to recover the account through a support ticket.

I'd advise against using the chat. It's risky.
