perlpolicy supported version updates have been very inconsistent

Open haarg opened this issue 1 year ago • 2 comments

The supported versions listed in perlpolicy have not been updated properly in a number of releases. Updating it is mentioned in the release manager guide, but this hasn't seemed to be effective at keeping it up to date.

We should probably add a porting test to verify it so we're certain we keep it up to date.

Can you point to which particular parts of pod/perlpolicy.pod you think are inadequate?

The problem is the first bullet point in the MAINTENANCE AND SUPPORT section. For example, for the 5.38 release, it states:

We "officially" support the two most recent stable release series. 5.30.x and earlier are now out of support. As of the release of 5.36.0, we will "officially" end support for Perl 5.32.x, other than providing security updates as described below.

This was out of date when the release happened. It matches what it should have read for the 5.34 release. However if we check the 5.34 release:

We "officially" support the two most recent stable release series. 5.26.x and earlier are now out of support. As of the release of 5.32.0, we will "officially" end support for Perl 5.28.x, other than providing security updates as described below.

This was also out of date, matching what it should have been for the 5.30 release. Checking the 5.30 release:

We "officially" support the two most recent stable release series. 5.24.x and earlier are now out of support. As of the release of 5.30.0, we will "officially" end support for Perl 5.26.x, other than providing security updates as described below.

Yep, still wrong.

In fact, only one release in the last ten years has the correct notice, version 5.24:

We "officially" support the two most recent stable release series. 5.20.x and earlier are now out of support. As of the release of 5.26.0, we will "officially" end support for Perl 5.22.x, other than providing security updates as described below.
