App stops as soon as the screen to sleep

Overview

App stops as soon as the screen goes to sleep. using Android 10. i've disabled battery optimization for the app, also the launch settings are customized, app is allowed to run in background. This began to happen after the recent major update that changed the UI. What can be done to fix this?

How to reproduce

open the app start playback let the screen enter sleep state app stops suddenly. it doesn't even seem to be opened anymore.
