[wish] Move image to Commons if needed and legal

Open nicolas-raoul opened this issue 7 years ago • 2 comments

I often run HarvestTemplates jobs that add "image" properties to thousands of items from the Japanese Wikipedia.

PROBLEM: Half of the images on the Japanese Wikipedia are local, and are not present on Commons. Among those, most are CC-BY-SA so they could be legally moved to Commons.

PROBLEM2: Moving thousands of pictures to Commons is not possible in a batch way. Moving with tools like CommonsHelper is extremely slow and painful, taking many clicks and page load waiting for every single image.

WISH: It would be wonderful if HarvestTemplates could detect that the image:

  • is on the local Wikipedia
  • has a license compatible with Commons

and perform the move automatically.

Quite hard to develop, but that would double the number of harvested images! And that would also make useful images available to more Mediawiki projects :-) Thanks!

Wikidata tool to harvest templates of Wikimedia projects

I'm afraid this is out of the tool's scope.

If this is out of scope, how about at least generating a list of images that would have been used if they had been on Commons? Do that the harvest operator can feed this list into another tool? (maybe MTC!)
