i made this

bits on the edge are further apart because we need a full pixel there (this is an upscaled 48x48 draft)

it's also very messy in terms of the ellipses' geometry because the icon needs to have good pixel alignment

i'm also worried about the colour because wow that's a juicy icon they made. would it look out of place next to other icons?

Maybe. Potentially could creat a black box around the application in order to make it look less extreme:

deezer doesn't even have a source for the new icon on their brand page (it was bloody hard to find and looked ancient)... only a 200x200 .png file.

It works, but the background would have to be much lighter (as per guidelines). See: I'm also not a fan of putting everything into rounded squares. I mean, Papirus icons will be on a panel or a dash anyway. I'm interested to hear what @SmartFinn would say about this.

Of course, the rounded square is the better for an application icon. Android/iOS app has it. Also, it's true that #4f4f4f is the recommended color for black, but #3f3f3f is also acceptable for a few cases.

The draft that I made earlier is 48x48, so if we put the shapes into a square it would be even harder to align the objects to the pixel grid.
