GNOME sound test icons are gray (hence low contrast) as opposed to adwaita icons. Compare in screenshots:

These are not Adwaita icons, these are built-in icons.
There is a bug with them. The built-in icons act like symbolic icons (adapt color to GTK theme), but when I put the same icons to the icon theme they are start acting like normal icons, even when I added -symbolic suffix:
I can't remove the "gray" icons on your screenshot, to force using the built-ins, because GNOME < 44 still used them. I can add the monochrome icons, but I can't force them to act like the native.
