Spinner has gray box when text and title are null on Android 7

I'm using the cordova-plugin-native-spinner and the spinner works fine however on my Android 7 tablet, I get a gray box around the spinner exactly as described here https://github.com/Paldom/SpinnerDialog/pull/32

On my Ionic 1 / Cordova 6.4 app, I have no issue. With Ionic 4 and Cordova 7.0 I get the issue. Same app just updated to Ionic 4.

Does anyone know how to make the box transparent? Is there a CSS work around?
