Try to get rid of timing overhead

Even after making the timing be more of a first-class citizen, it is clear that there is overhead unaccounted in the timing. For a completely empty tests, the timing overhead seems to be between 20-200 nanoseconds.

It may be worthwhile to try to measure an underestimate of this overhead and subtract that from the measured time.
