Generate files from Emacs manual Scribe source

Open larsbrinkhoff opened this issue 4 years ago • 5 comments

INFO; EMACSD > is the Scribe source for the Emacs manual.

It can be processed to generate the INFO; EMACS > file, and the line printer formatted EMACS; EMACS GUIDE file. But I don't know how to do that yet.

Checking include files, I see these:

@Include(GLOSS.MSS)
@Include(COMMANDS.MSS)
@Include(CHART.MSS)

The Twex file is called <INFO>EMACS.MSS and is considerably larger than the INFO;EMACSD file. The Twenex version has these include files too:

@Case[draft, ITS "@case{device, Dover (@Use<auxfile='EMACS-ITS-DOVER.AUX'>),
                                LPT (@Use<auxfile='EMACS-ITS-LPT.AUX'>)}",
             Twenex "@case{device, Dover (@Use<auxfile='EMACS-TWENEX-DOVER.AUX'>),
                                   LPT (@Use<auxfile='EMACS-TWENEX-LPT.AUX'>)}"]

The Scribe source code file INFO; EMACSD 1 was added in #2082. Repurposing this for generating one or more outputs: Dover, INFO, LPT.

I have successfully printed the older TJ6 memo 519 in RMS;EPAP on the XGP.

What about the scribe version? Does scribe work — to generate XGP output?

I'm not sure. There must have been some way to print Scribe documents at the AI lab. The INFO;GLP file says the XGP couldn't print TeX output (no DVI converter), so who knows? However, Scribe was initially from CMU (written by Brian Reid), which did have an XGP. So I'd assume Scribe could use XGP as an output device, at both CMU and MIT.

There is a SCRIBE;TS ITSSCR, so maybe just try that some time. There's also PUB, TeX, etc.
