Ocean-related indicator

Open huard opened this issue 4 years ago • 6 comments

Description

Add a first indicator for the ocean realm. Ideas:

  • [ ] Ocean heat content over the top 200, 700, 3000 meters (parametrize depth, average over all grid cells)
  • [ ] Basin averages (Atlantic, Pacific, etc)
  • [ ] Stratification measure (buoyancy frequency)
  • [ ] Marine heatwave https://www.nature.com/articles/s41586-018-0383-9
  • [ ] Wind stress https://journals.ametsoc.org/jcli/article/33/4/1209/346360/Southern-Ocean-Wind-Stress-in-CMIP5-Models-Role-of

I'm not trained in ocean indices, but I'll help wherever I can.

You may have ideas from the PANACÉS project, ie rate of sea level rise? I suggest you brainstorm with @aulemahal for a relevant yet simple indicator and then split the work.

I think this is low priority, but one step toward this would be to add a CMIP6 sst simulation to our test-data (variable tos).

Adding to this list:

  • Nino Indices
  • IOD
  • AMO
  • NAO...

I'm working on El-Nino indices. Will submit a PR soon.

Update: the ENSO indices require fancy spatial subsets, which we decided was out of scope for xclim.

Option for marine heat wave: https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/abs/pii/S0079661116000057?via%3Dihub 5 consecutive days of SST above the 90% percentile.
