AppImage on Fedora 42: .MOV clips are cut short when placed on timeline

Open huubvanniekerk opened this issue 1 month ago • 13 comments

Describe the bug: Videos (or clips) in the .MOV format are cut short when placed on the timeline. E.g. 6:07 minutes gets cut to 10 seconds, 6:48 minutes gets cut to 50 seconds, 2:42 minutes to 1:14 minutes. This has been for quite some time. When asked for advise, HandBrake was recommended for converting to .mp4. For me, this a no solution but a time-consuming workaround. When I use the ShotCut app, I find no problem using .MOV format videoclips.

Steps to reproduce the behavior:

  1. Go to projectfiles
  2. Select a .MOV clip
  3. Add to a timeline
  4. Find the video length cut (very) short.

Expected behavior: Each videoclip, be it 5 seconds or 10 minutes, having it recorded length on the timeline.

System Details:

  • OpenShot-v3.4.0-release-candidate-14811-0dfc8a8a-0b018e34-x86_64.AppImage, but had this issue with many previous builds as well.
  • Operating System / Distro: Fedora Linux 42

Hello @huubvanniekerk

  1. When you say "E.g. 6:07 minutes gets cut to 10 seconds, 6:48 minutes gets cut to 50 seconds, 2:42 minutes to 1:14 minutes.", are you implying that a video that is 6:07 minutes and dragged onto the timeline is now 10 seconds only, or do you mean that it has cut "BY" 10 seconds. Obviously same for the other .mov files.
  2. I have some .mov files and I imported them into Fedora 43, Ubuntu 25.10, and Windows 11 Pro using v3.4.0-RC-14811 and in all 3 environments I am not experiencing any loss of frams/duration.

If you don't mind, please share 1-2 of your .mov file(s) so we can test with it.

Hi @Colorjet3

I actually do mean a cut to 10 seconds so its duration on the timeline is only 10 seconds. And so on.

I'm not sure if there are more .MOV formats than just 1, since my videos have the .MOV (capitals) extension and you mention .mov (small print).. I record my videos with a Nikon 1 J5 camera.

I don't mind sharing a .MOV file in order to test it.

huubvanniekerk avatar Nov 19 '25 18:11 huubvanniekerk

Hello @huubvanniekerk

The capitalization should not matter. However, what might/will make a difference is what it was recorded in and profile settings (FPS, aspect ratio, etc.). That is why I was asking what it was recorded in.

The .mov files that I have are from an iPhone and I have no issues with them.

You mentioned Shotcut. When you import it into Shotcut, for the first time, does Shotcut ask you to convert or anything like that? I've seem some more advanced video editor do a conversion on the fly because they can analyze the properties of the video file and normalize some things on the fly. OpenShot does not have that feature. This is why it was recommended that you run your .mov files through a convert like Handbrake, ShutterEncoder, or VLC. All those tools can perform a batch process so it shouldn't be that bad of a process.

So, yeah, please share one of your .mov files with me and I can test with it.

hi @Colorjet3

To be honest, I don't remember if ShotCut asked me questions like that, but it's possible that I just clicked it away.

Unfortunately, my video-files fail to upload in here. Is there any other way to share?

huubvanniekerk avatar Nov 20 '25 08:11 huubvanniekerk

No worries, you can always start a new project and import one of your .mov files and pay attention if you are prompted to do anything.

To share a file, you can leverage one of your cloud service(google drive, onedrive, iCloud) and share a link here. I can then download your file and you can delete it from your cloud.

@Colorjet3 Ok, trying via (link removed)

This video is 6:07 minutes and was cut by OpenShot to 10 seconds. Let me know if you have it.

@Colorjet3 Since I've had no response since posting the link, I've removed it. If you'd like me to make it available again, please let me know.

Yes, please. I somehow missed your response and the link. I'll look at this later today once I have access to your file.

Thank you @huubvanniekerk I just downloaded the file and will be playing with it and report back. Feel free to remove the link.

Hello @huubvanniekerk I am able to replicate this issue in Windows 11 Pro and Ubuntu 25.10 using v3.4.0-Release-Candidate.

First, the workaround. Run your *.mov file through a converter like VLC, ShutterEncoder, or Handbrake and convert it to a either *.mov or *.mp4 file, but obviously with a new name. Now import this in and you are set to go. All these applications can perform batch processing so if you have many *.mov files that have this issue, you don't have to convert them one at a time.

My findings:

  1. When downloading sample *.mov files from the internet, I do NOT experience this issue.

  2. I am have my own home videos (*.mov) and NOT experiencing this issue.

  3. From within the Project Files window, Right click the *.mov file | Preview File | Play. Note that the preview goes dark at the 10 seconds marker including the audio. What is weird is that the preview window knows that there is more content becuase if you take the slider all the way to the right you will see the time = 00:06:07:15.

Please confirm that you are seeing the same thing.

  1. What are you using to record you *.mov videos and are making any special setting changes when you record it?

I am not sure if this is a bug or an enhancement or both. I will submit this in the queue for the lead developer to review it and decide the next steps.

Meanwhile, you have a workaround to continue your project.

Colorjet3 avatar Dec 01 '25 17:12 Colorjet3

Hello @Colorjet3

I can confirm your finding nr 3.

To record my .mov videos, I use a Nikon 1 J5 camera, with no special setting that I know of. The only (conscious) setting is "record video". Maybe the camera has a setting for another video format as well, but I would have to look into that.

I was already using the Handbrake utility, but I'd rather not use it since it creates a whole lot of new (unnecessary?) files on my disk.

huubvanniekerk avatar Dec 01 '25 18:12 huubvanniekerk

Thank you @huubvanniekerk for the confirmation and the addtitional information. I agree regarding the unnecessary files (and of course, another step in the proecess). This is in the queue now for the lead developer to review and come up with a fix. No ETA!
