[Bug] Win7: Uses 100% of one core from beginning and stays
Just started, no video loaded.
task manager: The load is distributed on 4 of 8 cores - in sum 12%. Kernel load is nearly as much as application load. Process "openshot-qt.exe" shows only 6% at process tab.
OpenShot v. 3.2.1 @ Win7-64

It is going to be difficult to provide support on Windows 7. Not many of us run it. Additionally, v3.4.0-Release-Candidate is on the horizon. Here is what I would try:
- Ensure that your computer hardware firmware and manufacturer drivers are up-to-date.
- Ensure that you have plenty of free hard disk space.
- Ensure that your Window 7 installation is healthy and that you have all micorosoft updates installed. This part is going to be challenging for sure.
- Uninstall OpenSHot.
- Make a backup of c:\users\username.openshot_qt folder.
- Delete c:\users\username.openshot_qt folder.
- Reinstall v3.2.1 OpenShot. If the problem persists go to step 8.
- Close OpenShot, if running.
- Go to openshot.org and download Production Release v3.3.0.
- Install it and see if that is any better.
If you are running Windows 7 I am going to assume that your computer is very old as well (You didn't provide detailed specs). You may want to think about upgrading.
Video editors, in general, are resource intensive.
Thank you for your kind answer. :)
But actually the computer I'm at is not "very old", but an 8y/o i7-6700 system with 8GB RAM and lots of SSD RAM. So I don't think it's a HW or ressource problem.
The steps you proposed... I've tried all of them already (having read some posts before)... without success.
I assume it has to do something with qt or python, maybe in connection with old Win7 system...? The strange large kernel load points to it; moreover as openshot app itself does not show with much load at task manager.
However... if I'm the only one with this effect (However: Who might notice a permanent 12% CPU load (on an 8 core system) nowadays... beside me?. So...).
Screenshots of taskmanager, after starting OpenShot, doing nothing (red line is kernel times).
Thank you for all that information. Couple of follow up questions:
- Do you have a dedicated gpu or integrated? If dedicated, how much RAM?
- Are you running 32bit or 64bit architecture?
My computer specs are: Processor = AMD Ryzen 7 3700X - 8-Core Processor (3.6 GHz) Installed RAM = 32GB (DDR4 SDRAM) GPU - NVIDIA GeForcce RTX 2060 / 6GB RAM Operating System = Windows 11 Pro 64bit
Running OpenShot v3.4.0-Release-Candidate-14760 (latest RC build as of this writing). Not sure if this will even run on Windows 7.
I've been running OpenShot as I was typing this and this is what Task Manager/Processes shows:
Not sure what to tell you about the next steps.
Additional info: As already said, the load stays the way shown above, no matter what I do. BUT... if I do "Save Project" load goes back to normal and stays there. Strange bug. EDIT: Same with 20251101 daily build.
