Editor windows/objects forget sizing and position from one day to the next
Describe the bug: Every time I open the editor the various windows/objects do not remember the size I set them to during the last session and have to be readjusted daily. Using Windows desktop and resizing the objects by clicking and dragging.
Steps to reproduce the behavior:
- Open a project and resize the various windows/objects to display all or only desired portions of various element
- save and export video
- Open the application the next day and objects will not be sized the way you left them the day before.
Expected behavior: Remember the position and size the users sets for the various objects and reload them on startup
System Details:
- OpenShot Version 3.2.1
- Operating System / Distro: Windows 10
Log Files: No crashes
Exception / Stacktrace: No exceptions
Screenshots: (Optional)
Project files commonly forgets the width that I set it to the day before
The timeline seems to grow vertically from one day to the next
Please download v3.3.0-release (Most current production release) and see the same issue persists.
You should perform a clean installation by:
- Close OpenShot if running.
- Uninstall via Add or Remove programs.
- Go to openshot.org and download v3.3.0.
- Install.
- Test and confirm either way.
Updated to V3.3.0 | 0.4.0
10-21-25 screenshot before closing the app
10-22-25 screenshot on startup, timeline object has grown vertically and now shows track 1 which I always have hidden by resizing the window smaller vertically.
Hmmm....I am not able to replicate this issue. I am running Windows 11 Pro and v3.4.0-Release-Candidate of OpenShot.
Let's try this:
- Close OpenShot, running.
- Make a backp of c:\users\username.openshot_qt folder.
- Delete c:\users\username.openshot_qt folder.
- Start OpenShot and open your project.
- Adjust the vertically so that Track 1 is not being displayed.
- Close OpenShot (Save the project if prompted to do so).
- Start OpenShot and open your project.
- Is Track 1 being displayed again?
Deleted the _qt folder after copying and pasting it in another location for a backup Opened OpenShot and changed my theme back to Humanity:Dark Adjusted the objects where I want them:
Closed OpenShot and then restarted the application and reopened my project:
Behavior is worse now, readjusted the window sizes, saved, closed, reopened and same result as above ^^^ each time. Maybe its the theme Humanity:Dark?
Changed theme:
Closed opneshot (by pressing X at top right of application window) and then reopened application (by double-clicking desktop shortcut), and then reopened project through file>open project
Same result, doesnt remember user resizing of objects
I am just unable to reproduce this so I don't know what is going on. I did test with all 3 themes. The Retro theme currently has a bug on Track 1 where clips don't get aligned correctly so until that is fixed, this test could be skewed.
However, both Cosmic Dusk and Humanity:Dark work fine for me.
- What graphics card do you have?
- Do you have the latest manufacturer drivers installed?
- What is your Windows display scale set to? Right click on the desktop | Display Settings | and you may have to scroll down to see the value. What is it and is it set to the Recommended?
- Do you have the latest Microsoft Windows updates installed?
- What is the display refresh rate set to?
I don't have Windows 10 but in Windows 11, when I go to Dispaly Settings, I can scroll down, I see "Advanced display" option in the "Related settings" section. Clicking on that I can find much more information about my graphics card, aspect ratio, refresh rate, etc. May be a screen shot of that so we can see what you have.
Obviously, if any of the suggestions above resolves the issue, then no need for a screenshot.
- AMD Radeon RX Vega 11 Graphics Integrated
- AMD software: Adrenaline Edition v25.8.1 Up to date, last checked today it states
- Scale and Layout: 100% (recommended), Resolutions 1920x1080 (Recommended) Landscape
- Windows updated a week or so ago, I have it paused until 11/4/2025
- 75Hz 8-bit RGB SDR
Thank you for that. I have a desktop and 2 laptops. The desktop has a dedicated graphics card. All 3 environments are running Windows 11 Pro. No matter what I try I am unable to replicate your issues.
Experiment with the following:
- In Display Settings change the Scale and Layout to 125%.
- In Advanced settings change the Refresh rate to 60 hz.
Do these changes one at a time and together as well.
If this does not do it, you may want to rebuild your Winodws 10 environment. Now days it is pretty easy to "Reset this PC" and keep all your files. You just have to reinstall your applications.
Or, just use OpenShot as is.
Changed scale to 125%, opened application and it starts out with the objects sized like the screenshot above, loaded project and resized, saved, closed, reopened, openshot opens with objects at the same dimensions as the screenshot.
Changed to 60hz and repeated process with the same results. is it just not coded to save and then reload how each object was positioned and sized before the application was closed?
I am not having these issues that you are. Any resizing of openshot windows, stay the same size when I restart.
I really don't know why you are having this issue.
The lead developer had noticed this as well and it should be working now in the latest v3.4.0-Release-Candidate. go to openshot.org/download/#daily and download the latest available.
Test it and report, eithe way.
Thank you, will test tonight and tomorrow, then report back
Opened the app today and it's better but it still messes with the user's sizing, I can tell it shrunk the width of the project files object because the 2025-08-11 is not fully displayed (2025-08-1...) and the bottom of Track 2 on the timeline is not down against the horizontal scrollbar where I always leave it.
Thank you for your feedback. I'll pass on this information to the lead developer. This might have to do with the Themes and some of the architectural coding changes the timeline is going through. I know that the lead developer is working hard on finishing other more critical bug so that he can relase v3.4.0-Production release so I am not sure if this will get worked on at this time. Possibly in v3.5.0.
I'll keep this ticket open for now. If you run into other anamolies related to this post then please continue your feedback.
