Buffer not buffering after adding audio
It does not appear to be an already reported bug. I searched.
Describe the bug:
I can add images to the timeline. I can hit play on the preview. Everything is good.
I can see the little blue buffer bar being built on the top of the timeline.
I add audio. I've tried WAV, MP3, and OGG.
The little blue buffer bar does not get built, and hitting play on the preview does not play the preview after adding the audio.
Steps to reproduce the behavior: As above.
Expected behavior: Normal behavior. Add the audio, the buffer gets built, I can hit play and do normal operations.
System Details:
- OpenShot Version 3.1.1, libopenshot: 0.3.3
- Operating System / Distro: Ubuntu 25.04 (Plucky). Nothing especially weird installed. ubuntu-restricted-extras IS installed. I should have MP3 and Ogg codecs, and of course WAVE is old and boring and should just work.
Log Files: I am not experiencing a crash, and the libopenshot.log is empty. The openshot-qt.log doesn't have any obvious errors listed. I can attach it if someone asks me to.
Exception / Stacktrace: There is no strange output.
Screenshots: (Optional)
First is just opening Openshot and opening my project. Audio files are imported but NOT added to the timeline. Buffer is correctly built on opening.
Second is playing the preview, everything is good. Can see the buffer being rebuilt if timeline is moved around.
Third is after adding audio. The buffer no longer builds. No more blue bar. Preview doesn't play. Kaput. There's nothing I can do to make it once again create buffering and play the preview.
4th is showing that I deleted the audio from the timeline, but still no buffer.
I have to removed the audio from the timeline, save, quit, reopen... and it buffers again.
If I open it with the audio added, it does not buffer
Feel free to reach out. I have a video of all of this that I can't show you, ironically, as I can't put it together without Openshot.
Oh, and I did open all of my audio files in VLC, they play no problem.
Oh, those displayed backwards. 4, 3, 2, 1. Sorry about that.
I deleted my .openshot_qt folder before trying this prior to reporting here, so all settings are default.
I had previous tried upping the cache_limit to 2 gigs. Didn't do anything.
FYI, the WAV file I'm trying to use is only 8M, the MP3 and OGG files are only 1ishM. Really shouldn't be a problem buffering those? I've tried smaller files as well. Any audio file added makes it not buffer.
I tried the daily appimage build.
https://github.com/OpenShot/openshot-qt/releases/download/daily/OpenShot-v3.4.0-release-candidate-13951-22cd5633-0b018e34-x86_64.AppImage
Same issue.
This is very similar to #5736 with the ppa on Ubuntu. I find the AppImage works fine with mp3 and other formats though,
The timeline in OpenShot is going through some major changes, including the Cache buffering process.
There has been many updates since build #13951. The lead developer has been very active the past 3 weeks so keep going to the Daily Build download page and download the latest v3.4.0-Release-Candidate AppImage and test with it.
Keep updateing this thread with any persistent and/or new issues you run into.
In all Linux environments, including Mac os and Chrome, you should be running the AppImage only. Do not enable hardware acceleration.
At this time I highly recommend that everyone downloads the latest v3.4.0-RC. Many changes to the Caching and timeline to improve performance.
