Initial view limited to first 5 minutes
In OpenShot v3.3.0-x86 on Win10:
Steps to reproduce:
- Import 1 .mp4 video exceeding 5 minutes.
- Add the video to the timeline.
Observations:
- The zoom slider is limited to the first 5 minutes. You can use it to focus the timeline on less than that but not more than that.
- In fact, if you preview the video, when playback reaches 04:59'30, a single frame plays repeatedly.
- Eventually, OpenShot drops out of this mode. Slicing a clip and removing it didn't do it. Manually sliding to close the gap did do it.
Desired behavior: Adding files to the timeline should adjust the zoom slider so that the user can choose to view the entire work or any part of it.
If it's infeasible to have this happen automatically, my #5741 suggests you add View-all, Zoom-in, Zoom-out buttons as in the Audacity audio editor.
Hello @Spike-from-NH. I am running Windows 11 Pro and OpenShot version 3.3.0.
- Zoom Slider. I imported a 10 min. video. The zoom slider is not limited to the 10 just as yours is limited to 5 min. This is working by design. What is the point of the zoom slider moving further out if there are no clips beyond the 5 min. (10 min. for me) point?
It would be nice to know "Why" you think you should be able to move the right edge of the zoom slider beyond the last clip of any track. What is the purpose and how is it of value? this will help the lead developer understan the need to change, assuming he agrees.

Last frame playing repeatedly. I am unable to replicate this. Your frame rate of your source video is obviously 30 fps since your last frame is at 4:59'30. The last frame previewing would be a static frame. Can you share a video of this so we can see what you are seeing?

Eventually, OpenShot drops out of this mode. How long does it play for before it drops out? This might give us a hint as to what might be going on.
Desired Behvior: I can see how this might be a nice enhancement. What I found though is that if you have a 5 min video and the timeline is only showing the first 4 min (meaning the right edge/5 min. marker) is off the screen. In order to add another clip you need to Zoom out to bring the right edge of the timeline of all the tracks in focus. As soon as you do this, the Zoom slider shows you all the clips.
May be I am not quite understanding so my apologies for the lengthy response.
Thanks for your reply (and for managing these reports). Sorry you aren't seeing what I am. I am not asking that the zoom slider let the user select a view beyond the end of the video. What I'm reporting is that, just after importing a, say, 15-minute video, there is no way for me to see beyond the first 5 minutes.
3....How long does it play for before it drops out?
Playing never makes it drop out; if I play all 5 minutes, I get that single-frame effect. As I report, "Slicing a clip and removing it didn't do it. Manually sliding to close the gap did do it."
In order to add another clip you need to Zoom out
Yes, I understand; I'm able to zoom the slider in and out as designed—once the slider begins to work. But not initially.
Despite my digression at the end of the report, this report is really not an enhancement but a bug: that the zoom slider is initially not set to the entire video. I'm using a cheap old PC but don't see how that would make a difference, unless OpenShot is having problems getting the memory it requires from Win10.
PS—In all cases, I seem to be able to get full control of my project with the following sequence:
- Move the playhead to any location in the timeline.
- Do Slice-and-keep-both.
- Slide the right clip rightward.
- Slide it back until it snaps together. At that point, the zoom slider changes to show the full project rather than just the first 5 minutes.
With this workaround, the bug is a lower priority for me.
Thank you @Spike-from-NH for the clarification and the workaround.
I did flag this both as an enhancement and bug. I am going to ping the lead developer to review this and decide the next steps.
