It is very hard to distinguish between the various thumbnails in the Effects panel. Use colored icons instead!
Most of the thumbnails in the Effects panel look nearly identical. (All show a globe with a ribbon around its middle.) Their thumbnails do not highlight the unique function of each effect.
As a result, the user cannot tell them apart. He has to READ each label and then decide which effect to pick. Thus, the whole idea of having a large thumbnail is defeated!
It would be far more productive if simple icons are used rather than such large thumbnails. Small colorful icons would even free a lot of screen space!
The best example is how bforartists (a derivative of Blender 3D) manages to convey the precise functionality of hundreds of buttons with colorful icons.
I know that the lead dev has some challenges with the current technology used for the current UI. There is going to be lots of change coming when the new UI redesign phase gets worked on. This will include all the icons as well.
