Having the same issue.

tomasfil avatar May 06 '23 10:05 tomasfil

Same issue; installing 3.1.1 on a fairly new Windows 11 PC. This is a brand new, first time install; Openshot was not installed on this PC before.

@tomasfil

Please confirm your version of Windows and version of openshot.

Colorjet3 avatar May 06 '23 23:05 Colorjet3

Please perform the following and share in this thread:

  1. Open a command prompt.
  2. Navigate to "c:\program files\openshot video editor" folder.
  3. Type "openshot-qt-cli.exe --debug" without the quotes and press the Enter key.
  4. You will see bunch of lines scroll in the command prompt window.
  5. Since Openshot does not start, the window will stop populating. When it does click anywhere in the window, press CTRL+A to select all the text, CTRL+C to copy, and then open notepad and CTRL+V to paste.
  6. Save the notepad file and share it in this thread.

Thank you!

Dear Developers,

I have a lot of OpenShot versions installed and uninstalled until I could detect since when this issue comes on my Windows 11 PC.

I found out: OpenShot-v3.0.0-daily-10783-186a4ca5-fab6e6ab-x86_64.exe Dec 19,2022 <--- works OpenShot-v3.0.0-daily-10786-186a4ca5-fab6e6ab-x86_64.exe Dec 19,2022 <--- failed And every next verions greater than v3.0.0-daily-10786-186a4ca5-fab6e6ab-x86_64.exe failed.

I hope this information can help you to finde the issue faster.

Greetings from Hartenholm Frank

Hi @SidaDan!

In the log file that you uploaded, there is an line that states:

INFO main_window: Quiting OpenShot due to failed local HTTP thumbnail server:
('127.0.0.1', 49911) 'utf-8' codec can't decode byte 0xfc in position 4: invalid
 start byte

The error message 'utf-8' codec can't decode byte 0xfc in position 4: invalid start byte indicates that there was an issue decoding a byte sequence as UTF-8. UTF-8 is a character encoding scheme that represents Unicode characters.

In this specific error, the byte 0xfc encountered at position 4 could not be decoded as a valid start byte in the UTF-8 encoding scheme. This byte value corresponds to the character ü in various character encodings, such as ISO-8859-1 (Latin-1).

The following is a note for our team (@jonoomph and @Colorjet3):

To resolve this error, you can try the following:
1. Ensure that the input data or file is encoded in UTF-8. If the data or file
is encoded in a different encoding, you may need to specify the correct
encoding when reading or processing the data.
2. Check if there are any issues with the data itself, such as incomplete or
corrupted data. If possible, verify the data source to ensure its integrity.
3. If you are reading data from a file, make sure you are using the appropriate
file reading mode and encoding settings to correctly handle the data.
4. If you are working with strings in your code, you can try explicitly
converting the string to UTF-8 encoding or using error handling mechanisms
to handle the decoding issue gracefully.

I have the same problem (almost):

Failed multiple attempts to start server:

('127.0.0.1', 62951) 'utf-8' codec can't decode byte 0xf8 in position 1: invalid start byte ('127.0.0.1', 62952) 'utf-8' codec can't decode byte 0xf8 in position 1: invalid start byte ('127.0.0.1', 62953) 'utf-8' codec can't decode byte 0xf8 in position 1: invalid start byte

When you say "Ensure that the input data or file is encoded in UTF-8" What data file are you talking about? The Error comes right away when opening the program - before trying to load any files.

@Mithrandir1975 - The notes in the Codebox are for the developers to help them debug this issue. @jonoomph commented in another post that this issue is probably related to the thumbnail server failing to start, so OpenShot cannot connect to the server, which causes OpenShot to crash. I looked up the error message and left the suggestion in my post so our developers might use them to track down the bug.

I have just the same problem.

I encountered the same situation. I can't start OpenShotVideoeditor.

Hiyokokun01 avatar Jun 28 '23 07:06 Hiyokokun01

Hi Developers & Users,

I think OpenShot is really cool and I think it's a shame that I'm stuck on all new versions > 3.0 that throws always errors with ('127.0.0.1', 51702) 'utf-8' codec can't decode byte 0xfc in position 4: invalid start byte generated.

Unfortunately I don't have the opportunity or the time To build a development environment around the error to debug. But I found a workaround that allows me to do this Continue to use OpenShot with the current version. I'm sure you can fix the bug now. I think searching in the class httpThumbnailServer will solve it.

Here are my instructions: Workaround: Searches the file thumbnail.py in the path C:\Program Files\OpenShot Video Editor\classes Note: Your installation path may be different.

Open the file thumbnail.py with an editor, e.g. Notepad++

Searches the entry's for attempt in range(3): try: # Configure server address and port for our HTTP thumbnail server self.server_address = ('127.0.0.1', initial_port + attempt) log.debug("Attempting to start thumbnail server listening on port %s", self.server_address) self.thumbServer = httpThumbnailServer(self.server_address, httpThumbnailHandler) self.thumbServer.daemon_threads = True exceptions.clear() break

Change the following: for attempt in range(3): to for attempt in range(1): and '127.0.0.1' to '127.0.0.2'.

OpenShot will now try exactly 1 time to start a thumbnail server with an IP which is not available. OpenSHot is now started "WITHOUT" the thumbnail server.

I was finally able to create a video again and upload it to YT :-)

Note: Workaround at your own risk and Sorry about my f... english

Maybe this comment is helpful.

Regards Frank

Also got this error on a fresh Windows 11 install. Managed to solve it by changing the computer name - the computer name contained an Umlaut ("ä"), after i changed it and rebootet, openshot startet without errors.

AndreasFFM avatar May 21 '24 06:05 AndreasFFM

This is very interesting find @AndreasFFM. What happens if you rename you computer and add the Umlaut ("ä"), does OpenShot fail again? Just to see if it is repeatable.

Colorjet3 avatar May 21 '24 13:05 Colorjet3

I can confirm that on a different PC with Windows 10 which didn't have that problem, adding an "ä" to the computer name caused it to show the 3 errors on startup. Removing the "ä" again also removed the errors (using a freshly installed Openshot 3.1.1)

AndreasFFM avatar May 21 '24 14:05 AndreasFFM

Thank you for that @AndreasFFM. I will assign this to the lead developer.

Colorjet3 avatar May 21 '24 14:05 Colorjet3

got the same error on one pc that has chinese characters in the computer name.

Same problem and same solution here. Tried the latest version today (not daily) and got the error. Renamed my computer from Stationär (Stationary in swedish) to simply MyPc and it started working.

This bug has been documented and in the queue. It still needs the leader developers review, approve/reject. If approved, then it will get in the queue to be fixed.
