Sound has extremely loud, repetitive noise added

It sounds like the audio buffer is being reset? There is a repeating noise pattern. It starts at the main menu, and can be somewhat improved by turning off music in the settings. As the music is turned off, a brief portion of the correct audio is heard before it goes silent.

The sound effects seem to work fine, but once you get into a race the repetitive noise comes back.

I'm running on linux with the VM option enabled.
