Unable to merge fields in the tree

I'm new to this application so this may just be my ignorance. I am unable to merge two fields in the tree using the Ctrl key (unless I'm misunderstanding the manual). I'm using the Mac OS version.

@justinrleung Is this problem still present with versions 1.8.22/1.9.9?
