Inconsistency in the use of catalog ‘URL key’s when activating ‘Add Store Code to Urls’

There is some inconsistency in the use of catelog ‘URL key’s. When using the catelog url key, your url looks like this:

catelog url key: catelog

www.example.com/catelog

When you then decide to activate the ‘Add Store Code to Urls’ this

having store view code: en_gb

You expect the url to become

www.example.com/en_gb/catelog

However the url becomes

www.example.com/en_gb/catelog.html

I don't really understand the issue. By "catelog URL key", do you mean the rewrite product URL key? Cause I tried removing the ".html" part from it and it shows correctly if I enable "Add Store Code to URLs".

using v20.5.0

using the store code in urls is not honoured everywhere in default theme. This prevents you from proxying a storecode path. Eg. This file is not being loaded.
