Categories in app drawer

Open monsterbitar opened this issue 7 years ago • 12 comments

I would like to propose adding category lines to group apps inside the app drawer. Add a small thin line with the category name, and the apps belonging to the category listed below per normal.

It could looks something like this (With 'O's symbolizing apps and unsorted at the bottom below an unnamed line):

Utilities ------------------ O O O O Navigation -------------- O O O O O O O O Games ------------------- O O Misc ----------------------- O O O O O ~---------------------------- O O O O O O O O O O O O O O O

I prefer to sort my apps in categories on the home screen , the app drawer should be kept alphabetic. I use App Organizer ( com.google.code.appsorganizer ) and Folder Organizer ( com.abcOrganizer.lite com.abcOrganizer ) to make folder / category widgets (even with icons!) on the home screen. Please do not add category support, there are specialised apps for this purpose and an app launcher will just end up in feature creep / featuritis and will have much more bugs if you add this feature.

If you are too lazy to make categories by yourself on your home screen, it's your problem. Please do not give the responsibility for that to the app launcher!

Is there a predetermined categorization preintegrated in all apps (like how Play Store sorts apps)?

I would support this as well that it some form of user plugin aside from the major project.

This is something OpenLauncher cannot resolve for you (automatic sorting/categorization), we cannot track metadata of every app - the count of apps is indefinite, and the metadata needed is not delivered with apks.

Well, it doesn't have to be automatic. In fact, I'd prefer it to be manual since automatic never does it the way I want to do it.

I'm with @monsterbitar. I'd like to have the possibility to sort apps in launcher as well. No automatic sorting algorithm, own categories.

It would be nice to have the possibility of switching between categorized / unsorted on the one hand, and alphabetic / installation order on the other hand. With those two switches, sorting order could be chosen between four modes: (1) uncategorized & alphabetic order: The way it is currently done. (2) categorised & alphabetic order: The way suggested by @monsterbitar - organized into own categories, alphabetically ordered inside each category. (3) uncategorized & installation order: This one is possible with my old LG G3's launcher. The latest installed apps are located at the launcher's end. Sometimes I find that sorting very comfortable and useful. (4) categorized & installation order: Sorted into the own categories, but inside each category not sorted alphabetically, but by installation date.

If one had the possibility to switch between ascending and descending order, that part would be perfect!

@just-Nob @monsterbitar Feel free to start working on it ;) PRs welcome

I'll do so as soon as I had the time to get into Java programming on Android... - unfortunately, up to now I'm only familiar with C/C++ and VHDL (more or less). Maybe a nice spare time project for getting familiar with it.

For me, this issue / feature request seems to be related to issue #279, "Sort by most used". For both, a nice concept should be drawen up, comprising all feature requests, before improvement was started.

com.google.code.appsorganizer is heavily outdated and, at least on my phone, crashes regularly. com.abcOrganizer.lite is non FOSS and contains several trackers. It would be nice to have a FOSS, up to date and robust solution.

The way that it's proposed is that it's openlauncher feature, no external app. But it needs to be implemented that's it. And as me and dkanada have lots other todo, we especially need community contributions. So if you have dev expierence (or want to learn) .. GO FOR IT ;=).
