Feature request- Define a rotor with a anti-clockwise rotation

Open ZL6462 opened this issue 2 years ago • 3 comments

Dear all,

I want to develop a wind turbine with new structure, and I am confused with how to define a rotor with a anti-clockwise rotation, namely the leading edge move anti-clockwise (the pressure side still towards the wind direction like the normal rotor).

Thank you for your attention. Best regards,

Dear @ZL6462.

OpenFAST does not currently support the modeling of wind turbine rotors that spin counter clockwise when looking downwind. To model a rotor that spins counter clockwise would require some changes to the source code. I agree that this would be a useful feature to add at some point.

Alternatively, you could model the rotor in OpenFAST spinning clockwise while being careful interpreting the sign conventions. There is some discussion about this in the old YawDyn User's Guide: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1sIu5JeA45GEcaXk6T6YPNd0sFMU_gQzQ/view?usp=sharing.

Best regards,

I'm reopening this request because it is feature worth adding to OpenFAST at some point.
