Add `gas vehicle` and related terms

Open lumi321 opened this issue 2 years ago • 8 comments

Description of the issue

Vehicles using types of gas as their energy source for propulsion are not included yet. To integrate them properly, other terms such as gas engine, LPG and CNG need to be included as well.

Ideas of solution

gas vehicle as a subclass of internal combustion vehicle: A gas vehicle is an internal combustion vehicle that has only a gas engine as a motor for propulsion.

I suggest three subclasses of gas vehicles i.e. for LPG, CNG and LNG. liquefied petroleum gas vehicle: A liquefied petroleum gas vehicle is a gas vehicle that uses liquefied petroleum gas as fuel. compressed natural gas vehicle: A compressed natural gas vehicle is a gas vehicle that uses compressed natural gas as fuel. liquefied natural gas vehicle: A liquefied natural gas vehicle is a gas vehicle that uses liquefied natural gas as fuel.

Other necessary terms: gas engine: A gas engine is an internal combustion engine that uses a gaseous fuel. liquefied petroleum gas: Liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) is gas mixture of hydrocarbon gases, mainly propane and butane. compressed natural gas: Compressed natural gas (CNG) is natural gas that has been compressed.

Workflow checklist

  • [x] I discussed the issue with someone else than me before working on a solution
  • [x] I already read the latest version of the workflow for this repository
  • [x] The goal of this ontology is clear to me

I am aware that

  • [x] every entry in the ontology should have a definition
  • [x] classes should arise from concepts rather than from words

I agree to these definitions.

For liquefied petroleum gas I think, we should have two state of matter related axioms:

  • 'liquefied petroleum gas' 'has state of matter' liquid
  • 'liquefied petroleum gas' 'has normal state of matter' gaseous

l-emele avatar Aug 31 '22 07:08 l-emele

For gas vehicle, we should add axioms that are parallel to the axioms of the existing internal combustion vehicles. So:

  • 'gas vehicle' 'has part' some 'gas engine'
  • 'gas vehicle' ''has part' only ('gas engine' or (not (motor)))
  • uses some 'natural gas

For the subclasses, it is then enough to specify the fuel:

  • 'liquefied petroleum gas vehicle' uses some 'liquefied petroleum gas'
  • 'compressed natural gas vehicle' uses some 'compressed natural gas'
  • 'liquefied natural gas vehicle' uses some 'liquefied natural gas'

For gas engine, we need the following axiom 'gas engine' uses some 'gaseous combustion fuel' and thus should adapt the definition to: A gas engine is an internal combustion engine that uses a gaseous combustion fuel.

I agree to these axioms. Only the natural gas in 'gas vehicle' uses some 'natural gas' might better be changed to gaseous combustion fuel because natural gas usually refers to methane-based gas mixtures but LPG is based on propane/butane.

Yes, you are right.

What about biomethane as fuel for gas vehicles: If biomethane is compressed and used as substitute for CNG, then it is the same vehicle as what we described as compressed natural gas vehicle, right?

Maybe it we need here a similar construct as we have for gasoline vehicles. There we have:

  • gasoline fuel role: A gasoline fuel is a combustion fuel that has a gasoline fuel role.
  • gasoline fuel: A gasoline fuel is a combustion fuel that has a gasoline fuel role. (equivalent class)
  • (fossil) gasoline that is bearer of the gasoline fuel role
  • biogasoline that is bearer of the gasoline fuel role
  • 'gasoline engine' uses some 'gasoline fuel'
  • 'gasoline vehicle' uses some 'gasoline fuel'

With that, we depict that the same vehicle can be run by both fossil gasoline and biogasoline.

So should we define something like a compressed natural gas like fuel role and a compressed natural gas like fuel which encompasses both (fossil) CNG and biomethane?

l-emele avatar Sep 01 '22 10:09 l-emele

We should include that notion indeed, not only for biomethane but also for biogas and syngas. Perhaps we can reduce the expression compressed natural gas like fuel (role) to compressed gas fuel (role)?

I thought about other possibilities to include this. The following seems to be possible: compressed natural gas vehicle: A compressed natural gas vehicle is a gas vehicle that uses compressed natural gas or a compressed substitute gas as fuel. 'compressed natural gas vehicle' uses some ('compressed natural gas' or 'biomethane' or 'biogas' or 'syngas')

But that is rather explicit and doesn't allow for easy expansion. So, the fuel (role) addition is probably the better solution.

But that is rather explicit and doesn't allow for easy expansion. So, the fuel (role) addition is probably the better solution.

That is exactly why we created for gasoline and diesel the solution with fuel roles.

Regarding biogas and syngas:

  • In my understanding, biogas can be used as replacement for compressed natural gas in a gas vehicle only if the CO2 is scrubbed before and we call such purified biogas biomethane: Biomethane is a gas mixture produced from biogas by removing carbon dioxide. It consists mainly of methane and can be used as fuel.
  • Our syngas (Syngas is a gas mixture consisting primarily of hydrogen, carbon monoxide, and very often carbon dioxide, that can be used as fuel.) is definitely not a 1:1 replacement for natural gas, but you probably meant synthetic methane: Synthetic methane is methane that has a synthetic origin.

I created the following list which shows the discussion so far, removes inconsistencies and fills some gaps:

Vehicles:

  • gas vehicle: A gas vehicle is an internal combustion vehicle that has only a gas engine as a motor for propulsion. Axioms:
    • 'gas vehicle' 'has part' some 'gas engine'
    • 'gas vehicle' ''has part' only ('gas engine' or (not (motor)))
    • uses some 'gaseous combustion fuel
  • liquefied petroleum gas vehicle: A liquefied petroleum gas vehicle is a gas vehicle that uses liquefied petroleum gas as fuel.
  • compressed natural gas vehicle: A compressed natural gas vehicle is a gas vehicle that uses ~compressed natural gas as fuel~ a compressed gas fuel. Axioms:
    • 'compressed gas vehicle' 'has part' some 'gas engine'
    • 'compressed gas vehicle' ''has part' only ('gas engine' or (not (motor)))
    • uses some 'compressed gas fuel
  • liquefied natural gas vehicle: A liquefied natural gas vehicle is a gas vehicle that uses liquefied natural gas as fuel.

Engines

  • gas engine: A gas engine is an internal combustion engine that uses a gaseous fuel.
  • compressed gas engine: A compressed gas engine is a gas engine that uses a compressed gas fuel. :new:

Fuels

  • liquefied petroleum gas: Liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) is gas mixture of hydrocarbon gases, mainly propane and butane. Axioms:
    • 'liquefied petroleum gas' 'has state of matter' liquid
    • 'liquefied petroleum gas' 'has normal state of matter' gaseous
  • compressed natural gas: Compressed natural gas (CNG) is natural gas that has been compressed. Axiom: 'compressed natural gas' 'has role' some 'diesel fuel role'
  • compressed biomethane: Compressed biomethane is biomethane that has been compressed. :new: Axiom: 'compressed biomethane' 'has role' some 'diesel fuel role'
  • compressed synthetic methane: Compressed synthetic methane is synthetic methane that has been compressed. :new: Axiom: 'compressed synthetic methane' 'has role' some 'diesel fuel role'
  • compressed gas fuel: A compressed gas fuel is a combustion fuel that has a gasoline fuel role. :new: Axiom: 'compressed gas fuel' EquivalentTo: 'combustion fuel' and ('has role' some 'compressed gas role')

Fuel role

  • compressed gas fuel role: A compressed gas fuel role is a fuel role that expresses that a portion of matter can be used in a compressed gas engine. :new:

With that, I think we are ready for implementation. Do you agree?

l-emele avatar Sep 06 '22 07:09 l-emele

Thanks for the remarks about the gas types.

The overview looks good. There are some copy/paste mistakes though.

  • Instead of 'diesel fuel role', you meant compressed gas fuel role, right?
  • Similar with A compressed gas fuel is a combustion fuel that has a ~~gasoline~~ compressed gas fuel role.
  • And also 'compressed gas fuel' EquivalentTo: 'combustion fuel' and ('has role' some 'compressed gasfuelrole')

Regarding compressed natural gas vehicle: in the axioms you already talk about compressed gas vehicle i.e. without natural. Then we should use that for the label and the definition as well.

Then, some more axioms can be derived from above definitions:

  • 'liquefied petroleum gas vehicle' 'uses' some 'liquefied petroleum gas'
  • 'liquefied natural gas vehicle' 'uses' some 'liquefied natural gas'
  • 'gas engine' 'uses' some 'gaseous combustion fuel' (Perhaps also an update for the definition of gas engine: A gas engine is an internal combustion engine that uses a gaseous combustion fuel.)
  • 'compressed gas engine' 'uses' some 'compressed gas fuel'

Lastly, I would add these two axioms to liquefied petroleum gas:

  • 'has disposition' some 'combustible energy carrier disposition'
  • 'has role' some 'fuel role'

With these little modifications, we are good to go from my side.

You're right about the copy & paste mistakes. Well spotted!

I also agree on your further proposals.

Do you want to implement this?

l-emele avatar Sep 07 '22 06:09 l-emele

Sure, I can do the implementation.

lumi321 avatar Sep 07 '22 12:09 lumi321

Is there a preference regarding "liquefied" or "liquified"? So far, LNG uses "liquified" and in the definition of natural gas "liquefied" occurs.

lumi321 avatar Sep 07 '22 13:09 lumi321

The Oxford Dictionary, has only liquefy. According to Merriam-Webster, liquify is less common than liquefy. So let's use liquefy consistently.

l-emele avatar Sep 07 '22 13:09 l-emele

Okay, than I will change that in LNG.
