Orientations of solar radiation receiving planes

Open carstenhoyerklick opened this issue 2 years ago • 8 comments

Description of the issue

Solar radiation receiving planes as solar energy converting devices or measurements can have different orientations

Ideas of solution

Horizontal plane Suggested defintions, but still need some more deep discussion

  • A plane with its normal facing straigt upward
  • A plane that is perpendicular to the direction of gravity
  • Wikipedia: In astronomy, geography, and related sciences and contexts, a direction or plane passing by a given point is said to be vertical if it contains the local gravity direction at that point. [1] Conversely, a direction or plane is said to be horizontal if it is perpendicular to the vertical direction. In general, something that is vertical can be drawn from up to down (or down to up), such as the y-axis in the Cartesian coordinate system.”

Vertical Plane Suggested defintion: A vertical plane that is perpendicular to the horizontal plane. The slope is 90°, It needs a surface azimuth angle to be defined.

Normal Plane Suggested defintion: A normal plane is oriented that the normal of the plane is pointing towards the sun.

Inclined Plance Suggested defintion: An inclined plane is a plane with a defined slope and solar azimuth angle.

Comment: A typical inclined plane is a tilted rooftop.

Single Axis Tracking Suggested Definition: A plance that is following the path of the sun by roting along a fixed axis. Typical axis orientations are North-South or East-West.

Two Axis Tracking A plane that is following the sun by rotating around two axes. The plane is always oriented normal.

Workflow checklist

  • [x] I discussed the issue with someone else than me before working on a solution
  • [x] I already read the latest version of the workflow for this repository
  • [x] The goal of this ontology is clear to me

I am aware that

  • [x] every entry in the ontology should have a definition
  • [x] classes should arise from concepts rather than from words

I think, we first need a definition for plane.

Alternative term for inclined plane: titlted plane

The plane is to be defined in #1074. These should then be sublasses to #1074.

Should we replace "plane" in all the above defintions by "solar radiation receiving surface" as suggested in #1074

Tracking sounds a lot like a process, so we should define it as such:

  • solar tracking: Solar tracking is a process of in which a radiation receiving surface is following the path of the sun on the sky.
  • single axis tracking: Single axis tracking is solar tracking in which a radiation receiving surface is following the path of the sun by roting along a fixed axis. Typical axis orientations are North-South or East-West.
  • two axis tracking: Two axis tracking is solar tracking in which a radiation receiving surface is following the sun by rotating around two axes. The plane is always oriented normal.

We could additionally add something like solar tracked receiving surface and subclasses as equivalent classes:

  • solar tracked receiving surface: A solar tracked receiving surface is a radiation receiving surface that participates in solar tracking.
  • single axis tracked receiving surface: A single axis tracked receiving surface is a radiation receiving surface that participates in single axis tracking.
  • two axis tracked receiving surface: A two axis tracked receiving surface is a radiation receiving surface that participates in two axis tracking.

@carstenhoyerklick : Any thoughts on the proposal of my comment from 17 May?

Is there something from the discussion of OEO-DEV 46 that can already be implemented?

In PR #1448, we implemented the following classes:

  • solar tracking
  • single axis tracking
  • two axis tracking
  • solar tracked receiving surface
  • single axis tracked receiving surface
  • two axis tracked receiving surface

@carstenhoyerklick : Is there still something missing from this issue or can we close it?

Reading again the issue start, all those different planes are still missing. We won't solve this in the next days, thus I move the milestone.

I think we can close this one.
