Feedback from a colleague testing the OEP
I asked a colleague (who is a modeller) to test a little bit the OEP, find some data, download it an so on. Here is the main feedback:
-
[x] Wording data, database and data view is confusing.
-
[x] The picture on https://openenergy-platform.org/factsheets/overview/ is hard to read on a smaller screen and it is not obvious that you can click on the different parts of the picture to go to the different fact sheets.
-
[ ] For tables with a lot of columns not all columns are shown. As the horizontal scroll bar is out of the window, it is difficult to understand that there are more columns than actually shown.
-
[ ] It would be nice to have something like dropdowns for the entries you are filtering. Something similar to the two other fields of the filter function.
-
[x] When downloading data after filtering the data it was expected that the download contains only the filtered data. However the download includes all data of the table.
-
[ ] Excel cannot handle the provided CSV. However this is a known problem of the German localisation of Excel, but still this problem should be kept in mind.
-
[ ] Regarding the colours, a more colourful design would be preferred.
-
[ ] It would be good if the table view would use the whole screen width.
-
[x] A better place for the meta data would be below the table. There it could be read better.
-
[ ] The GWP data was expected in the emission schema and not in the climate schema.
-
[ ] Unclear why the ksz_2050 tables have only the 2050 tag while the data of these tables covers also the years 2020, 2030 and 2040.
-
[ ] Edit: And most importantly: A search function directly on the home page would be very helpful.
I am working on adding 2020, 2030 and 2040 tags to the tables. While doing so I realised it would be a good added functionality to be able to change tags for multiple tables at once. -> possibly a new issue ...
That written -> as it is now: it would be a significant effort to document in each metadata table the modifications in the tags that were made ... so a bulk edit of fields in metadata tables would also enhance the workflow.
2 short clarifications:
- concerning the colors: the different shades of blue lack contrast which make them hard to distinguish on a screen that is not very bright
- concerning the filters: if you don't know the exact wording used in the tables, it is difficult to filter since you have to enter it correctly (e.g. "power plant" vs "power sector" or if you're not sure of the spelling). That is why I suggested to give the user the option to preselect the entries somehow.
@christian-rli : I have added you to this ticket (not sure of Jonas handle) - I really think @sludig made valid comments about metadata being shown as a sidebar being not ideal. If they could be shown below the data table, this would improve usability.
If we could, at the same time, show tags and downloads above the table (maybe instead of the currently "misunderstandable" tabs), this would also allow for the table using the whole width of the page.
Not sure whether this design question would be up for tackling right now, but from my point of view it would be great if we could address it as it seems relatively straight forward approach to more user-friendlyness. What do you think? (also @wingechr ?)
Done: tags with 2020, 2030, 2040 added to respective KSZ tables.
@han-f : Jonas' handle is @jh-RLI . @TuPhanRLI made a similar comment today about the metadata being practically invisible on the side and I agree. Personally I don't think I'm capable of a quick fix to this, especially when having to move all that info away from the sidebar. If I touched this now, It'd probably look weird and would have to be fixed a gain and again. Also, I am trying to focus more on the things required to conclude the project, which currently eats up all my time and @jh-RLI will have to support me in this.. I do agree though, that the page would benefit hugely from a systematic rework. So while I fully agree, I also think it'll probably have to wait a little while.
