@n8fr8 We are working on the FAQs sill and will show three questions and answers for the first iteration. Here are the 3 questions and answers.

  1. Why won’t this website load or this video play? You probably have a strong security level set (2 or 3) and things are disabled. If you want to view the content try lessening your security level setting on that page.

  2. How do I know I’m connected to Tor with Onion Browser? After you open Onion Browser and wait a few seconds the browser screen with bookmarked .onion sites should load. Try opening a website with a .onion address. If successful you are connected over Tor. .onion addresses are only reachable via Tor. You can also check your connection over Tor at any time by going to https://check.torproject.org/, a link created by the Tor team to tell you whether you are connected to Tor or not. Sometimes there are connection errors. If after a few seconds you are not redirected to the Onion Browser website, you should see a screen in Onion Browser prompting you to use a bridge or restart the app.

  3. What does the shield icon with the number in it mean? These are the security levels set for the website you are viewing. There are 3 levels and level 3 is the strongest level of security. Depending on which level you choose, the website you are on may experience performance issues. This means some things may not be displayed or viewed (work). They may act as broken.

- 1 Insecure This could leak your information and potentially be dangerous. This level allows web pages to use some functions (WebRTC, Audio/Video, etc). That might connect over your original connection instead of tunneling through Tor.

- 2 Moderate JavaScript is allowed, but some of its features like WebSockets, geolocation, XHR, etc, are still explicitly disabled.

- 3 Secure Disables WebSockets, geolocation, XHR, etc.

  • You can update your security level at any time by tapping the shield and selecting your choice. You may also customize security settings for any site.

After you open Onion Browser and after a few seconds you the Onion Browser website loads, you have successfully connected to Tor.

I strongly recommend to use the latest TestFlight of Onion Browser while writing. This is old behavior. We now do have an app-integrated landing page. No network connections are done before the user enters anything.

A more appropriate answer would be something like: "Open a website with a .onion address or go to check.torproject.org. .onion addresses are only reachable via Tor."

If you want to view the content try lessening your security level setting on that page.

Uuuuh-ooooh! Do not advice to loosen security unless you talk about the implications in the same paragraph!
