Stuck on "Checking Connection to Anki...", Obsidian crashing/goes black

Hello,

Long-term user, never had any problems until now. For the last few weeks whenever I try to sync between my vault and anki, nothing happens for about five minutes and then Obsidian crashes.

Seems similar to some other outstanding issues but my console never gets past "Checking Connection to Anki". Anki and AnkiConnect are all set up as they've always been, reinstalling either has done nothing, same as reinstalling this plugin or even installing other forks.

Latest version of Obsidian + the plugin, Windows 11.

Are you using any other obsidian plugins? I've had problems with excalidraw files being scanned in the past. Are you using some plugin like that? The excalidraw files may be of the format [name].excalidraw.md which causes the plugin to scan these rather huge files. Result is that obsidian freezes for me. Not necessarily a black screen but it stops reacting to mouse clicks etc. If I open the developer console beforehand it'll show at least a few messages mentioning that files are being scanned so maybe it's not that. We have to be able to reproduce this issue. Is it also occuring when you create a new vault and just add a single file (and set up the plugin settings like you did in your other vault) and have it scan or is it specific to your main vault? If it's specific to your main vault it has to be something that is going on there. Try to reproduce the issue in a vault you can share with us with data that isn't private/sensitive. If I can get the error to happen on my device that'd help.

Am using other plugins but not using Excalidraw or any other plugin that requires special or unusually large files.

Tried it in two different test vaults:

1. A vault with much fewer files in it but once that is still actively in use. Here Obsidian turned black and effectively crashed but the flashcards did transfer to Anki. Unfortunately this vault is private and cannot be shared.

2. A true test vault with ~10 mostly empty files in it. Anki consistently crashed this time while trying to sync. I tried it three times, each time Anki timed out and became unresponsive. 🤷🏿‍♀️

@poeticua can you reproduce it in a vault that you can share publicly? Maybe a new vault you just set up.

Having similar issue, and I also do not use Excalidraw or anything similar. Used this plugin without problems for years.

Step-by-step:

1. I try to sync vault.
2. I get Checking connection to Anki
3. Nothing happens for a minute or two.
4. Obsidian goes black, I have to reboot.

If I pop devtools open, it points me towards getDefaultTags(file, folder_path_list) - in particular it highlights for (let folder of folder_path_list).
