VX Support (Movie Files)

Open lzardy opened this issue 1 year ago • 1 comments

Possibly out of scope, but I figured since the description said "general file formats" I'd at least attempt it. The VX file format is used fairly often for movie files, including Metroid Prime Hunters. As of writing, the most up to date writeup of the format can be found here: VX Actimagine Video Codec I've made a simple binary template for this as a starting point. The main roadblock is constructing the codecs (both video and audio). I also have yet to separate video and audio data blocks as the writeup was somewhat ambiguous on this. The ideal endgoal is the extraction, conversion, and playback of these files without game code or emulation.

This is in scope, just something I had filed under "I can't do it, very few people can do it, and possibly zero people would want to do it even if they got paid." It's a niche inside a niche. My only lead to follow up in the future was this unmerged ffmpeg patch that went through a few revisions before going stale in 2021.

I'm very interested in any progress you make. Thanks a lot for even looking at it in the first place.
