Is this project alive?

Hello!

Several years ago I used TOI satisfactorily on a laptop computer that refused to hibernate with the distro kernel. Then it was super-easy to install TOI because it was distributed by my distro (Ubuntu). Now I'm on the same situation (with a different machine) but there is no TOI kernels on Ubuntu 18.04 or Debian testing. Confusingly enough, there is a tuxonice-userui package.

Is TOI in usable state? What I have to do to install it? (On Ubuntu 18.04 or any other recent distro).

Hi, @NigelCunningham has to answer if he wants to keep this project alive.

If you don't need to keep files mounted with loop as partitions over hibernation, then you can achieve really high resume times and quick response after it. The "loop" issue is still unfixed, so I need to umount such partitions before hibernating(!!!).

Whenever you are able to compile the kernel yourself, please read my solution from the bottom of: https://github.com/NigelCunningham/tuxonice-kernel/issues/42 I'm still not able to retrieve a patch with "https://github.com/NigelCunningham/tuxonice-kernel/compare/vanilla-4.16...NigelCunningham:tuxonice-4.16.diff" -- somekind of server overload, also not fixed for months now.

If you want, I'd send the base comparison patch for 4.16.0 to your email or upload it somewhere. Please leave a word if still interested.

@ManuelKrause : thanks for your kind offer. It seems that there are Ubuntu kernels with TOI here:

https://github.com/mschlaeffer/ubuntu-kernel-with-tuxonice/tree/bionic

I'll try those first.

As of why you can't obtain the diff you mention, the most probable cause is the amount of data involved: the operation times out before it completes. Checking out the repo and executing the diff from the command line should work.

Hi guys.

The answer is "Just barely". I've gotten myself too busy with other projects, so it doesn't get half the love it deserves and poor Manuel is left waiting.

I'll have a look at the diff issue. Perhaps the github repo I forked the Linux tree from has stopped updating.

It looks like I need to replace this repo with one forked from so I'll do that as soon as I can find time - that should fix the getting-a-patch issue.

@NigelCunningham: Thank you for at least leaving a note on here. Was a little complicated to find it again due to your repository changes. I really want to encourage you to continue this project and to hopefully give it a little more love and time. Inspite of it's current limitations, TOI is still superiour in resume times.

Would you be able to publish a 4.17 related TuxOnIce kernel, now that you rebased the kernel source repo, soon? I really hope so.

Best regards, Manuel
