It's really just adding insult to injury by creating another modal dialog that you have to close.

Good suggestion to make the error alert less intrusive. It would maybe also make sense to add a feature to suggest a website where the extension didn't worked. So I'm aware of websites where the extension couldn't work.

Maybe the extension icon could change to have a little X in the corner if it fails?
